Perhaps. But not in the way you think of it. Art is not the same as the taste of carrots. It is possible to misunderstand an artwork, which introduces additional complexity into the picture, since you can dislike it, but your dislike is based on a false understanding.

Hence, even if it is "subjective" in some sense, there is a lot more to say.

What happened was you were talking about something computer-related without an understanding of what you were saying. People with knowledge about computers read more into what you say because the words you use have meaning. "System-wide" means, for example, it'll affect the entire Operating System. Otherwise it's a widget-specific spellchecker, which is what OS X uses.

Nice cover. What happened is that you read more into it than was intended (if that's what's happening, and you aren't just BSing again), and went off onto a completely silly and irrelevant rampage.

The argument was about whether it was useful to have a spell check that works in any app. You said it wasn't. You said it would be a resource hog. You said X, you said Y. You made a fool of yourself by reading too much into someone else's comments.

When ordinary people talk about spell checks, they mean what I mean.

But even if that is true, you are still full of it, because you ended up arguing that we didn't need such a spell check, no matter what.

You really are quite pathetic.

What I said was that a system-wide spellcheck is ridiculous and unnecessary, and that I would personally turn off any widget spellchecker as well.

A system-wide spellchecker clearly indicates it works across the entire system. If that's not what you intended, why did you say it? My money's on the fact that you didn't know it was not actually system-wide, which is a problem of your ignorance, not my "reading into" what you said.

But you're biased, and obviously so. I freely admit my own bias and make a point of saying so while at least noting problems that people may encounter if they take it. You try to pretend that your own bias is objective.

Example - advice on buying audio players:

Mine: "Try them out and buy the one you like best. With stuff like this, that's the best way of deciding. Make sure you try them out. You should always try audio equipment."

You: "Don't buy an ipod, if you do I'll have a tantrum."

There's more to it than trying out the physical product in the store.

There's the issues of:
1) audio quality
2) battery life
3) durability
4) warranty coverage
5) format support
6) vendor lock-in

I've also said that, of course in an ideal situation you should try out all products as well.

But there's far more to it than that, an educated consumer comes to the store with far more knowledge than "I hear the iPod is supposed to be cool".

The reason you don't offer any form of real argument to defend the iPod's characteristics is because you know there's none to be made. The iPod loses out to competition on virtually every bullet I've listed, which also happens to be the only areas where we can argue in the realm of facts. Something your type is notoriously uneasy about. You prefer to deal with the subjective and try to rule it a fact.

I used terminology with specific meaning for regular folks. It's not my fault that you are incapable of carrying on a conversation with normal people.

You spent the whole thread complaining about the uselessness of optional spell checking without being specific. You just didn't like the idea because it was Apple's, hence your ridiculous defence of bad spelling.

Once again, you try to pretend that you meant something else. My money is on you feverishly looking it up afterwards in order to find any possible way out of the daft things you said in that thread. Knowing you, you'll go back and edit your old posts to remove the obviously crap stuff (which you've done before).

I don't like the idea because I don't like spellcheckers in informal situations. I disable them in my instant messengers, I disable them in personal email clients as well.

Informal grammar between people is hardly perfect, and is not intended to be. I don't want to waste my time with the spellchecker complaining each time I spell colour as "color", or if I spell "messenger" as "messanger", since I type so fast that I don't care...

I also don't think the defense of "bad spelling" (being one misspelled word in the thread on my behalf) was ridiculous. My position was as long as the situation is informal and the idea and intent was patently clear, there's no problem with being anal about spelling...

That's not a ridiculous position, but a ridiculous position would be calling that a ridiculous position.

U of T is easily Canada's finest university and is pretty well known. Ask any diabetic for an opinion on that matter. It's not Oxford or Cambridge, but it is easily in the world top 30.

It used to be. Unfortunately, it's an English speaking university in a French province. This means it has suffered from political fallout. It's a shame really, because it is, as you say, a very fine university.

I've heard of McGill, but not of UofT. A lot of people, when I was talking to them about college, knew about McGill, but none of them even mentioned UofT.

Funny, McGill is older, but U of T is better.

The one thing McGill does have going for it over U of T is that it's in Montréal. Toronto is pretty dull compared to Montréal. You'd have to be some kind of loser to have a bad time in Montréal.

I think McGill has been having money trouble too. I know a couple of their profs in my area were looking to move our way a couple of years back.
