What chance do you think the Alliance has of grabbing a seat or two (they're leading in one riding, atm)?

Depending on concentration they could take one. It all depends on if there is a concentration of people around some major town who are unhappy with Klein. That could happen in cattle country down south.

He has about as much chance of losing an election as Putin.

Early yet, but it is shaping up to be a slaughter of Tories in Redmonton. The Liberals are killing them and the NDP look to be shut out.

Oh. CTV affiliate just called it for Ralph! I am shocked.

                    Odd thought...

If Martin really wants to make inroads out here, he will appoint at least one of our Senators elect.

Who thinks it's likely Martin will do it?

I think at least 2/3rds should go into indexed securities investments. Alberta would do well to look toward Norway in this regard.

Also, oil isn't going to be at US$50/bbl forever. The worst thing that could happen is that oil plummets to US$28/bbl and the government has just signed up to a lot of spending.

I don't know what a "heritage" fund is, but on its face, it sounds like a bunch of BS to me. A real sinkhole for money.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Homeless people in Alberta? **** that! It's cold there so if I were homeless I'd move to Florida or southern California. Sure, I'd still be homeless but at least I wouldn't freeze to death.

Even the socialists are proposing something along those lines.

It's an investment fund along the lines of what you proposed. It helped a great deal in balancing the budget and paying down the debt.

Oh, OK. I misunderstood. Yes, the trust fund is the way to go. Here's Alaska's. Worth about $50,000 per person. Worth much more per person than Norway's fund.

INVESTING FOR ALASKAINVESTING FOR THE LONG RUNWHO WE AREAPFC is a state-owned corporation, based in Juneau, that manages the assets of the Alaska Permanent Fund and other funds designated by law, such as the Alaska Mental Health Trust Fund. The APFC Board of Trustees has established By-Laws, Governance and Investment Policies, and Resolutions to support an efficient and effective management ...

Klein leads Tories in Alberta to another majority
Last Updated Mon, 22 Nov 2004 23:00:05 EST

EDMONTON - Ralph Klein has led his Conservative party to another majority win in Alberta, in what he says will be his last election as premier.

Early results showed the Conservatives with a big lead and they easily cruised to another majority government. CBC News projected a Tory majority just 35 minutes after the polls closed.

The last party to form the government in Alberta before the Tories was the now defunct Social Credit back in 1967. Since 1971, and for the past 10 elections, the Tories have been unassailable - with Ralph Klein leading them to victory four consecutive times.

The win came in spite of a four-week campaign that many described as quiet, visionless and uninspired, mainly because of Klein's refusal to discuss policy, especially his plans for the reform of health care.

"I don't think our vision is murky. If you pay attention, you'll see how it's all coming together," he said during the campaign.

Now, after 12 years as premier polls show Klein's personal popularity is slipping. But with a booming economy Alberta has never seen better times. Fueled by record-setting oil prices and the royalties that flow into the province's treasury, the province is awash in cash.
                                Kevin Taft

As for the two main opposition leaders, Kevin Taft of the Liberals and the NDP's Brian Mason, neither managed to puncture Klein's balloon during the campaign. But Taft says it is just a matter of time. "We're the only alternative to the Tories. The Tory government is going to fall, whether it falls on Monday or in three or four years, it's going to fall and it's going to fall to us."

When asked, the 62-year-old premier has said that this was his last election. But he has also made clear that he intends to stay in the premier's office for the next three-and-a-quarter years - a clear warning to any leadership hopefuls not to move too quickly.
