  • Blair is a great man with a broad vision.
Eh? What have you been smoking?

Blair is an oily little weasel who has spent most of his time living off of poll data. He is the epitome of fake sincerity, a hollow man with no real substance.

I hate to say this, but both Thatcher and Major were at least genuine people, even if I didn't like their politics. At least they actually stood for something and were relatively sincere (well, Thatcher was pretty blunt).

Blair on the issue of Iraq stands for elite opinion, which regards the relationship with the United States as a means of keeping Europe at bay. His own people loathe him and his mealy mouthed excuses for being Bush's *****.

Personally, I think he's a creep. But other than brown nosing Bush he's run a pretty decent government, by far the best government Britain has had in a long time. A pity he chose to wreck the Labour Party with his spineless attitude on Iraq.

    • I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

You weren't particularly helpful in WWI.

        • The term "fundy" crosses denominations. Not all Babtists are fundies, not all Lutherans are social liberals. besides, Bush is a Born-Again, which are all wackos.

Were polls in Britain telling him to invade Iraq?

Helpful enough to convince the Germans they weren't going to win. I'd say helping bring that bloody war to a quicker end was beneficial to all the people who lived because of US intervention.

                • dannubis, at Kasserine the Americans were under British leadership and British air power.

                  Zen -
                  Let's see...

American Revolution: A Franco-American Army wins the Battle of Yorktown and the French fleet trounces the British fleet at Chesapeake Bay preventing any sort of reinforcements, thus achieving victory for the US and independence. You know that more French died in that battle than American?
How many Americans died in WWI?

WW1: US fights TWO meager battles in the closing months of the war and long after the back of the German Army had been broken by the British and French.

                  sure, real comparable...
America's entry into the war convinced the Germans to hang it up. It's strange you'd cite the French dead at Yorktown as a worthy sacrifice and dismiss the American dead in "two meager battles". The US has more than 100,000 dead and 200,000 wounded - I'd say your "two meager battles" is BS.

                      • OB - There are people still alive who helped Europe in it's time(s) of crisis. Citing the Germans and Romans is illogical.

                        • According to you then we should still be despising the Germans for what happened?

Or should debts be more morally binding than grudges?

Yeah, but I'm not sure it's worth the political fallout they also got from it.

yep, and the brits had at that time the entire africa corps on the run. so they were bad generals ?

all i was trying to point out is that the allies underestimated the germans at the beginning of ww2. england was saved by the channel and the heroic resistance of the RAF (combined with the stupidity of the german luftwaffe). france was overrun. but they did put up a serious fight. they didn't just roll over, like some posters here seem to conveniently believe.
