I forgot the "why" part.
I was Catholic because I was baptized. Apparently, when I was only a few months old, my parents thought I would not be up for theological discussion, so they assumed that I would be happy to be a Catholic just like everyone else in my family.
When I turned 18, I stopped going to church -- although I still lived with my mother, she would no longer compel me to go to church at that point. When I came out to myself and others at age 20 as a gay man, I completely disassociated myself from the Catholic Church and from that point on, I was and still am, a non-denominational Christian.
