Talking over problems BEFORE resorting to confrontation!? What, do Canadians hate freedom? Perhaps I should move to Finland instead.

And where the hell is Slowwhand? I would have thought today of all days he would stop by and say, "AAAHAHAHAHAH!!!! I TOLD YOU SO!!!! GO MOVE TO CUBA!!!"
The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

The Weighted Companion Cube is cheating on you, that slut.

At the the same time, just like Rome of old, we are deeply riven between Plebeian and Patrician. But - so far, anyway - we don't allow those internal divisions to stand in our way whenever some non-Roman needs a righteous beating.

Inevitably however, the balance will swing and more and more effort will be spent providing bread and circuses to the Plebeians (or at least the modern equivalents: welfare, sports, and national medicine). And all the while, the core values that made us great will slowly leach away, and we'll wind up as Canadians. At which point - equally inevitably - we'll be wiped out by some nasty barbarians who are shockingly devoid of moral compunctions (read: conservative, religious, blood thirsty, and confident). And the cycle will continue, ad infinitum.

For those who find this offensive? Good! Go read some history! As for me, I'll burnish the armor, offer a sneer, and enjoy these sunny Republican days as long as they last.
      Offensive? No.

      Laughable? Yes.

It must suck to be smart enough to realise that your country's power is on the decline yet stubborn enough to deny it and vain enough to care...

It's not that bad. Certainly better than realizing that my country was never in a position of power that they could fall from in the first place.

              • We've never tried to be. And we've had a much larger impact than our numbers would suggest. More importantly, we've been right instead of just always attempting to win.

                • The US lost its greatness somewhere around 1950. It's all been masturbation since then...

                    • American power has been declining for almost 60 years now. In the meantime, we've managed to place communism on the ash heap of history alongside fascism and now we're working on Islamism. I'm pretty proud of that.

                        • Now, now, there's nothing at all wrong with Canada.

But in the spirit of analogy - and thus from the perspective of Rome - Canada is useful as a minor ally and trading partner, but in the sphere of power politics they are no Carthage, and hence.....irrelevant.

From what I understand of that Civ game of yours, it's all about launching one's own spaceship before the others do. So this is no big news after all: my father just beat you all to the stars once more. - Philippe Baise

military: anytime from 1945 to 2004. We still have the greatest military in the world. In terms of raw power, 1991 would be the greatest point (largest navy, most nukes etc.)

Economically: in the 90's during the tech boom
                            Technologically: 60's

Nah, in 1945 the Soviets were still a formidable force, even with nukes.

In 1999 there was absolutley nobody on the planet that could stop us.

Culturally we also owned the world in 1999, and most people generally liked us.

Now everybody hates us, our military is tied down in Iraq, and our global economic dominance keeps shrinking.
