Also, I think that there is a "silent majority" of Americans who, deep down, think that it would likely be good for the country if the price of gas went up, as to stimulate conservation and efficiency movements. That's really my rationale for not thinking the recent hike as no big thing.

Price of gas no longer a political issue in US?

I think the lack of any real crises atmosphere, especially given how this country reacted when the same thing happened in the 1970's, indicates that something has changed in our attitude towards rising gas prices. Despite Bush's claims to the contrary, most Americans now realize that it isn't a God Given Right to tool around on $1/gallon (or less) gas, and that doing so might even have deletrious consequences.
Anyway, the price of gas has risen by almost 50% for most Americans since 9/11. Where is this vocal supermajority of which you speak?

1.14 per litre =>
4.315€ per Gallon
5.146$ per gallon ( I think, not that good with conversions)

I think after the initial sticker shock, we just acclimatized to the new prices, especially after they fell twenty cents a gallon later on. Plus there's just so much more to worry about. Still, I wouldn't want to be an SUV owner right now.Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

People probably are just resigned to the situation. Under a dollar per gallon wasn't that too long time ago, about 6 years ago IIRC. Ever since, gas prices has been gaining steadily. I remember I used to whine about gas being at around 1.30. Now I miss those days.
