during the Clinton years back east in Virginia I actually payed 96cents a gallon for a while. That wasn't that long ago.

        What the hell happened?

        oh yeah, Bush.

True, and you go shorter distances. But in any case, a road trip across Europe by car would have to cost a fortune.

Not to mention the fact Europeans have no where near as far to travel as many Americans.

The big media companies want to merge and become even more efficient from the perspective of profit-revenue ratio and even less efficient from the perspective of responsiveness, change, and maximal theoretical revenue. The Democrats are slightly less likely to let them do that.

Cheapest gas I've seen in Los Angeles which is few blocks away from where I live, fortunately, is 2.29

2.50 seems to be the average although.

In Croatia, gas is about 1.10 US $ per litre, most of it taxes, like in the rest of Europe. This is with the average monthly paycheck being 575 Euros. And people still drive.

Likely there's a difference between Croatia and the US. In the US, most poor people drive cars, while in Croatia most poor people probably take public transportation. Because of this, Croatian politicians might feel that it is OK to tax those who can afford cars in the first place, while in the US such taxes would be a real hardship.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
