Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh

            Marketing is coercive.
It is coercive, but not so much in a cospiritorial way.

I know that this seems a contradiction, seeing this is the internet in which we state our views, but surely you cannot be serious?
..................Ha ha, I see your joke. Good one. I am a pompous fool. Cheers for reminding me. All is futility!

I think Chirac is trying to increase his domestic popularity by engaging in US bashing.

I would think France would be flatered, we learned all about cultura dominance from them in the first century of our existance.

This, he said, would lead to a "general world sub-culture" based around the English language, which would be "a real ecological catastrophe".

So says the vanguard of the American cultural hegemony legions.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

It's not coercive, but Chirac is right that American culture can be overwhelming. The economic power of the American entertainment industry, fueled by domestic earnings, gives it the potential to overwhelm smaller markets. This has nothing to do with the quality of the product, but rather the money available for marketing. If left unchecked, Amerian culture could choke off other cultures, although I think it is more likely that we'll see the rise of a multinational culture rather than a specific global Americanised culture.
