They seem to have followed up after some kids escaped and were being shot at.

It seems most of the terrorists escaped also. HOW!?! Why wasn't the school surrounded?

As for all the conspiracy theories, why not wait until we have a clearer picture of what actually transpired... then we can all start blaming the various people and institutions we don't like, and everybody will be happy.

Hahahaha... I take it you don't watch TV? Reports are that children from the gym came out unconsious, legs badly burned due to the explosions etc.

On BBC they are pointing out how very few children of 10 or less seem to be among the survivors running around, a reporter mentioned that most of the casualties being brought out and taken to hospital were 6-8yr olds.

According to Inter-Tass (which quite frankly is more full of crap than Fox), a bus went up the the school gates to collect dead or wounded hostages from earlier this week, a terrorist saw the military moving about, fired, and the Russians fired back, ending in this.

IIRC after the opera house incident the original estimates of civilian fatalities were originally low, but grew very quickly, though in that case a large number of fatalities were caused by the failure to provide the antidote to the narcotic gas to the victims in a timely manner. Let'a hope that the fatality rate doesn't sky-rocket in the next few hours, still, with 280 wounded I fear that a significant portion of those will die.

My impression is that the situation was forced upon the Russians. Apparently some hostages made an escape and were fired upon by the militants, forcing the Russian soldiers or volunteers to return fire. The sound of gunfire may have caused some of the militants to trigger their bombs. collapsing the roof of part of the school, after which it turned into a free for all.

The Russians used ununiformed volunteers. One report stated that some men in civilian clothes were seen running from the building shouting that they were chasing some of the attackers. I wonder if some of the militants might have escaped in this fashion. The volunteers didn't even wear arm bands for identification.

We'll know more over the next few days.

Terrorists and special forces agreed that dead bodies would be carried out. As that happened, there were two explosions, hostages on the ground floor ran for it and terrorists opened fire. At that, special forces responded with fire to protect the fleeing hostages and took the school over.

Russians admitted that there have been "significantly more" hostages than reported, definitely over 500. Most terrorists are alive, managing to escape mixing with the crowd. Special forces are conducting a search in the area right now. Many hostages killed and wounded .

Oh, just in - at least 150 hostages dead, at least 200 another wounded. Total hostage count possibly was up to a thousand. Some special forces personnel were killed in the fight, too.

People coming outside say there were 1,000 hostages. I doubt that's an accurate number though.
