  • Actually, doing such a thing wouldn't be without precedent. In 1959, Willie McCovey won the NL award with only 192 AB (in which he hit 354/429/656).
I assume it was because the rest of the field was severly lacking. But if you look at the numbers this year, you'll find Youklis has ~.60 advantage in OPS, which isn't that great to negate the difference number of games played. Also, Crosby does happen to be a superior defensive player in a very important defensive position.

I think the combo of not overwhelming advantages in offensive stats for Youklis, combined with the much lower number of ABs, and the much greater defense by Crosby, swings it for Crosby easily.

That doesn't mean Youklis won't be the better player... he just didn't get enough time in with the big boys this year.

        • and what bp is saying is that the AL east is a coin flip, but yanks and red sox are nearly guaranteed to go to playoffs. good enough to bet on it.

          • yankees are still +8 in the adjusted standings page. bad news for them. red sox are -6, good news for us. it means that we will have all the breaks going for us now, since the rest of the season they have been going against us.

            • giambi took 'non performanc enhacing steoirds' that lead to his cancer

Way to actually read the article you posted.

              Here is what it says:

While I understand the continuing speculation surrounding the details of my medical condition, I continue to believe that it is a private matter," Giambi said in a statement released by the club. "I appreciate the fact that the media has a job to do, but my focus now is on returning and contributing to this team."

Citing "three Major League sources," the Daily News laid out two possible reasons for Giambi's own reluctance to divulge details of his condition: the circumstantial, not documented, link between pituitary tumors and anabolic steroids, and the irony that his cure includes treatment with a medicinal steroid.

According to the newspaper, Giambi's "treatment, which has been approved by Major League Baseball, involves a form of steroids that are not performance-enhancing."

"Giambi is taking corticosteroids," the paper's report continues, which "break down tissue and are used as anti-inflammatories for a number of medical conditions."
He's taking the "non-performance enhancing" steroids NOW, to TREAT the condition.

The allegation that the condition could have arisen from performance enhancing steroids, however, is still there.

I'm not saying Giambi wasn't on 'roids. I AM saying you need to work on your reading comprehension.

              • Oh, and the Red Sox are absolutely on fire lately. The Yankees are actually playing well again, thank goodness (or rather thank El Duque), and yet the Sox just keep up the pressure.

This one's going to come down to the six remaining head-to-head games. Sweet!

                • Btw, any of you BoSox fans *****ing about the Nomar trade now?

If Nomar was dealt before the season, the Sox would be by far in 1st. He was a cancer who was cut off from the team and they've returned to the way they were before he came back from the IR.

Told you it was a good deal... mostly for the psychological reasons. Theo does it again!

And yeah, I was kind of sad, in a sentimental way, but I never claimed that it would lead to our team's ruin at all...

                        • Actually, IIRC, LoA was very pissed that you didn't get more. Though one example about how much you DID get is Derek Lowe's numbers since the deal. With an upgraded defense, he's been 6-1 since the deal and looks more like the guy who won 20 games a few years back.
