There is much debate about this right now. It appears that Kerry's campaign disagrees with you. The swiftboat add is being blamed for some lower polling numbers for Kerry of late.

About Kerry's "bump" after the convention...it was much smaller than expected and among likely voters, Bush actually had a bump. Kerry's campaign is in trouble. If Bush has a strong convention, then expect Rove to go very Positive and concentrate on ads inspiring Patriotism.

Oh...didn't everyone know that all democrats are liars??

Molly, et al., I think the major point in Ann makes here is that the Democrats tend to lie about their war records (and perhaps a lot of other things) because the press never investigates anything they say and so they can say anything and get away with it.

Yeah, but it was NOT the press who investigated. It was the Special Prosecutor.

                    Coulter's point remains.

Ned: There is a certain understanding in most aspects of society, including the press, that you don't question the service of any person who it is documented fought in any major war. Democrat or Republican or Independent, you treat them with respect and admiration. If they have medals, that's futher reason not to question their actions during their service. You could bring up Bush's national guard service as a sign that the media is trying to ruin something, but if he really had actively served, no one would question him. The media, as much as you and Coulter don't like it, does not actively seek to ruin veterans.

That precident was set in the 2000 Republican Primary by George W. Bush and Karl Rove.

Perhaps we have had no history of investigations of a war record before because it is assumed that the person getting the medals deserved them. However, Kerry brought this on himself by trashing his comrads, first in 1971 and then in his book. This has nothing to do with Bush.

The question is, will the press now start to investigate everyone's claims to be a hero in the future having found that Kerry's claim to be a hero is largely bogus.

Why the hell is Kerry's "claim" (when, in fact, it is the Military's claim) that he is a hero bogus? Because a bunch of partisan veterans with a bias for Kerry came out and made some statements about him that may or may not be true?

This newest ad is even worse. It charges Kerry with saying things that were in fact taken WAY out of context. When he spoke in 1971, he did speak of atrocities, but the part they left out is the FIRST sentance, where he says that this is being relayed to him through first-hand experience of other veterans who didn't like the war and wanted to tell their experiences of atrocities that they wanted relayed to the Senate in order to stop the war.

The way it seems to me he was trashing the system that had him and his comrades doing that stuff, not his comrades.

So it comes down to a choice between someone who's hero status is disputed versus a confirmed draft dodger. I'd ignore the issue and vote for the one whos policies I agreed with.

TEF, you are definitely misunderstanding the degree of shock and anger our soldiers had to Kerry's senate testimony, not only at the time but over the years. Trying to parse it carefully now may be pursuasive to younger folk who were not there. But to people who put their lives on the line for a cause, Kerry is traitor.

His comrades did support Kerry in the past when he personally was charged with war crimes. But they largely turned on him when they found out just how much he trashed them and glorified himself in his book "Tour of Duty" that was published in January of this year.
