Smoking Too expensive anyway, and bad for your health. Quite controversial anyway, me shouting about people should live healthy, trying to eat correctly and work out a lot, not drinking so much alcohol either, but then smoking.... but that's the end of it!

good luck, smoking is expensive, and over the long term quite damaging to your health.

      Thanks for telling the obvious.

I want a cig so bad, but I haven't smoked today. I did smoke last night though after I promised that I would quit right away.

            Is nicotine a neo-Pavlovian thing?

Ie. the craving for cigarettes is there because the body is conditioned to associate cigarettes with the nicotine, and then demands cigarettes. It is interesting...because the body would demand an entire package, rather than crave say, nicotine in a pill.

So if I put nicotine in diluted cyanide (as in, not immediately lethal), and drank it every now and then, would I crave cyanide?

              Update:

2nd patch now securely in place on upper right arm. Wouldn't know what to do if we didn't have those. Brrr. No smoking now for 35 hours, and I alternate between a feeling that I'm JUST in control of this thing, and feeling like a little defenseless lamb that's been left behind in the woods. Oh, what's to become of me?

As with the other times I've tried to quit, it's simply amazing how quickly and dramatically my senses and general condition improve. I'll make a little list of the changes since yesterday morning:

              01) I can smell things I didn't use to, like going from one room to another where there's a slightly different odour. Or opening some food item and being able to smell it without having to stick by big nose half way through the food.

              02) Food tastes stronger and better. Even a drink of Coke is vastly improved, like it's a different product or recipe from two days ago. I'm being careful not to eat too much though (eventhogh my appetite is improved), because the desire to smoke is bigger after meals.

              03) I'm able to literally LOL at a post here or something funny in the paper, without having to hold back laughing for fear of coughing.

              04) Breathing is much smoother now.

              05) Chronic tension in upper back area has subsided.

              06) Skin feels softer and cleaner (maybe I'm imagining this, but it's my impression)

              07) Sensory impression/sense of touch (don't know English term) in general seems improved. It feels good, hard to explain.

              08) Better, calmer sleep. I've slept twice now since quitting, and it's been remarkably more tranquil and fulfilling than what I'm used to.

Ok, I'll expand on the list in the coming days, as hopefully more benefits show themselves. I think I'll number them to keep a tally.

Wow. You're almost making me want to quit caffeine.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

                  Hey Winston,

It's probably wise to focus on things such as those on your list.

On the subject of having a Coke, I've found a little sugar or caffeine here and there actually takes away some of the nicotine urge, and even if that stuff is addictive as well, and not too healthy either, I guess it's the lesser evil here.

Oh, the irony, I was actually smoking while I wrote the above. And not particularly enjoying it, I might add. It's a great idea you and Pekka have going here, can I join the project?

                    Of course you can Monk!

Funny I always thought you only smoke that funny stuff, the SF-tobacco, so to speak.

                    • Monk,

No you have to put things in your mouth that don't have any taste. Tasting things makes you want to smoke. Of course you and some people might be different.

I stopped with the SF tobacco when I finished high school, because I never actually got much noteworthy effect out of it; it was mostly a social thing back then. I tried smoking a bit at Roskilde 2004, but it doesn't really do anything for me. Maybe we should have brought the 'Dark Side of the Moon' CD along.

Nah, I've been smoking since 16 or so, a bit on and off but mostly on since I left the non-smoking home in 2002.

Oh, and for your amusement/pleasure, I've had second thoughts about ye olde SF support.

Well, indeed I am often craving for a cigarette, but some of the time I find I'm mostly just craving for some kind of stimulation, hence the sugar and/or caffeine part.

Anyway, like you said, different people experience different needs. For example, even though my cigarette consumption goes up when I drink, I don't have as many problems going without as most others.

Now, abstaining on a work break on a stressful day, therein lies the real problem...
