Cool. Now, WTH did the Al-Mahdi army evac a such asset? Some weird behind-the-scenes deal? Or just a desire not to get whacked?
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

My guess is that the AC 130s firing all night spooked them, and morale inside was collapsing. Sadr figured "he who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day"

        Whewww! That's great news!
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

reuters cameraman says there is still fighting near shrine, and al Jazeera denies IP are in shrine.

correction, AJ quotes a Sadr aide who denies IP are in shrine.

Never report things until about 6 hours later when combat is involved.

He wants an Islamic Iraq. I doubt their's much Iranian influence going on.

I disagree... going up against an occupying superpower takes balls. He's not a coward. The US military is the one using smart bombs and cruise missiles... the Iraqi militias are the ones going up against Abrams tanks with AK-47's. I want Sadr out of the picture as much as the next guy, but don't make the mistake of thinking he's a coward. Those guys got more balls than you or me.

                    latest from Reuters:

"Witnesses said that by late afternoon, civilians were wandering around inside Iraq's holiest Shi'ite site while workers swept marble floors. There were no police or armed men from the Mehdi Army of radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr in sight. "

He's a coward who gets other people to do his dirty work. And you're wrong. Al Sadr is not attacking a superpower, he's attacking Iraq. That's well established. And we use smart bombs to smoke them out of their holes. I love those videos from AC-130s showing little figures running around AK-47s, and a few second laters, there is a big crater where they used to stand. You praising Al Sadr is pretty sick I think. You have no respect for the Iraqi people or American soldiers. Sadr is he wasn't a coward, would go out and fight himself. He is definitely a coward.

Beeb reports Gov of Najaf cant confirm IP in the shrine. Some reports say inner mausoleum is locked, nobody inside. Reports of continued fighting outside mosque. Reports Sadr wants to turn over shrine to Sistani, no word on acceptance.

                        Fog of war is intense.

I never said I was. I'm saying he is only attacking Iraq right now.

                              • It looks like Sadr is going to be as hard to capture as OBL and Saddam. Someone ought to put a bounty on his head and see how long it takes to find him holed up in a rat hole.

I have no idea why anyone thinks they can make a deal with this guy that is worth anything. These Muslims appear to have no honor.
