It is a travesty that two ice dancers, with a 5 minute routine that beats out only a few other pairs from the few countries that do the sport, can win a Gold and up their country's medal count, while a large team of soccer players has to play a dozen games, and compete with almost every country in the games just to get the same reward.

exactly the opposite here... the IBA shows other athletes all the time. Actually at one time, in the gymnastics finals, the commentators were describing our athlete's performance, while the camera was showing Paul hamm, IIRC.
They only play the American and now Israeli anthems. By the way, I was rather surprised to find out that the opening part of the Israeli anthem closely resembles "An Old French Song" by Tchaikovsky.
