  • If you want to talk rapes of boys in Ottoman "society" than in the Sultan's harems then it wasn't much better either. Although admittedly it happened more in the harems.

My point was that in one it was a choice (Thebes, Athens) in the other it was a savagery.

    • @Ancyrean: Exclusive homosexuality just might be caused by having two alleles of a gene which is reproductively beneficial to have one copy of.

That said, I too am rather skeptical of the notion that homosexuality is wholly genetic. Supposedly, the more older brothers a man has, the more likely he is to be gay - if this holds, it's big trouble for genetic models. There was a New Scientist article exploring a theory according to which male homosexuality was a side-effect of the foetus attempts to deal with the mother's immune system, the idea being the more male children the mother has carried, the better prepare is her immune system to attack them, leading to a heavier response and consequently a higher rate of homosexuality among younger sons.

Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

Moreover, I don't think they've ever managed to discern any sort of inheritence.

Ella re file I guess you might have been offended by my suggestion that homosexuality was mundane in ancient Greece. Otherwise, I wonder why else you would make haste in trying to make a point about "Ottoman savagery" (which is way off the subject at hand).

I did not have any ulterior motives, I just referred to the one of the few, if not only, examples of a human society in which male homosexuality was so much an accepted part of daily life, as part of the general argument in the thread (with no offense intended).

Interesting theory. I wonder how they would explain female homosexuality in this context.

I do too; unfortunately, the article didn't address the question.

                        • Here's another way of looking at it, without homosexuality in question.

Scenario: An evil alien monster has taken the whole world hostage with an evil banana killer. S/He gives you two options, however. You can jump in the incinerator full of gazillion degree heat bananas, saving the human race and killing yourself. Or, you can stay in your cell forever, able to live out your life, and the banana whacks all the humans.

                          Options:

A: You stay true to human instinct. That is, you do what all humans fundamentally want to do: live.

B: You take one for the team, and you jump in the incinerator to save the rest of the human race. This goes against all the instincts in your body, but your moral obligations (I.E., your higher thinking in your brain) to the human race push you towards this one.

The situation is virtually the same as your scenario, options A and B the same ideas (A being your instincts toward what your body would normally do, B being the higher thinking of "taking one for the team" for the future). The difference is that we drop homosexuality, which you obviously have a great problem with, and instead we put an alternative in.

Does my situation disprove the idea of avoiding pain in normal situations? Nope.

Does your situation disprove the idea of homosexuality being a real thing in normal situations? Nope.

Both our scenarios are extreme cases where higher thinking in the mind will tell the person to break their natural idea to save the world.

Another way to look at it would be that you and your heterosexual partner are infertile. The human race is virtually extinct. There's another homosexual person of your sex who survived along with you and your partner. Scientists developed the wonderful "procreate without both sides" device, which obviously only works with homosexual couples. They have one right here with you.

Do you have a homosexual "coupling" to preserve the human race?
