JohnT's random thoughts about the movies thread...
The Princess Bride is an overrated piece of dreck.
You, sir, are an idiot . Coincidentally I agree with Boris that you have bad taste in movies .
Btw, you should have seen Big Fish first. That is an utterly amazing movie! Hidalgo was 'meh'.
Oh, the questions:
1. No, I don't own a VHS player and I wouldn't rent a VHS even if I had one. DVD all the way, baby.
2. If I rent a DVD, I'll only get widescreen. Hell, I'm paying for this crap, I want the best. I don't mind if movies on HBO are pan-n-scan because, well it's a movie channel and I'm paying like $10 for like thousands of movies (with 5 HBO channels).
3. I use Netflix. I like it. The Blockbuster thing is interesting and you get the video store atmosphere, but it is easier to just drop it in the mail and get your next DVD in your queue a few days later. And you can have 3 out at a time while Blockbuster is 2 out at a time and costs a little bit more.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I never rent VHS anymore. I got tired of watching copies that were terrible quality. At least with a DVD I can wash them before watching them. Its amazing how dirty some DVD's are. Sometimes I have to wonder whether the previous viewers were using them to play frisbee.
I prefer the widescreen versions (54" TV ) but sometimes they are not available.
Dont use netflix or the new blockbuster monthly offer but I have every movie channel known to charter cable.
I showed it to one of my friends and she was trying to guess what would happen next through the whole thing. I kept telling her it's not that type of movie... she didn't get it.
I found out where Imran was in my Fellini discussion: telling me that I have bad taste in movies.
Given that Imran apparently defines bad taste as liking European masters while falling all over himself praising pablum like AOTC and Princess Bride, I know all I need to know about his taste in films.
The only Fellini film I've seen is La Dolce Vita, which is masterful. But I'm not an officianado of his work.
But wouldn't Imran be defining bad taste as liking European masters, as he seemed to be mocking you for liking Fellini in that thread.
AOTC was a big ****ball of a movie, albeit not as big a ****ball as its predecessor, TPM. Still painfully bad.
Princess Bride, however, I have to differ. It's a wonderful, charming movie. It's one of the few fantasy films that really captures the feeling of a fantasy world. It captures the essence of the book perfectly.
It's funny when you watch a movie that you really liked years ago but come away from that viewing a little disappointed.
I just bought 'Time Bandits' on DVD because I remembered really liking it when it came out. I watched it with the family last week and even though it had its moments, it seemed incredibly dated now.
Compare that with 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' I got the DVD set last Christmas, and after watching it, felt that it was as good as I remembered it.
I wonder what movies that I like now will fade over time.
Widescreen all the way, especially for historically-based epics.
