Please for the time being ignore whether you or anyone else agrees or disagrees with the BNP's policies. Create a different thread if you wish to discuss those.

But if threatened with the sack for one's political beliefs, surely you Americans could take this issue to a higher and higher court? What would be found?

This just seems anti-democratic, and dare I say it, fascist.
Mere membership in a political party or organization would not be disqualifying in and of itself in the US. Behavior or expression which is disruptive or undermines the public mission of the employing organization is a different issue entirely.

In the past being a member or former member of the communist party did disqualify someone from holding a job with the federal government.

Well the whole violent overthrow the government thing comes into play there .

In the USA it is illegal to fire someone based on political affiliation.

To be fair, the UK does have a "supreme court". It's the House of Lords and is the the highest court in the land via the Law Lords that sit on it.

What we lack is a "Supreme Court" that's independent of the executive and legislature.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
                  -Richard Dawkins

I've noticed that the US has a much more open idea of what free speech should entail. A lot of European countries (especially Middle European countries) believe the ideas of the US on this matter go too far.
You are taking the piss there Imran? I don't think you comprehend, Europeans don't see you as being particularly 'free'.

Do not be fooled by the BNPs facade, they are trying to give some kind of legitimacy to their thuggery. They are heavily involved with football hooliganism, and I am sure this will give you some sort of idea of what the BNP is, and always has been about. This is why a police officer is forbidden from associating with such a group, not for political reasons but their association with hate crime.

...a police officer being part of such a criminally-linked organisation is a clear conflict of interest.

No, not at all. It is quite obvious when Germany and France ban all mention of Nazis. And Britain's libel laws are not conducive to free speech (the accused must prove that it wasn't libel, compared to the other way around).

Yea, this wouldn't fly in the US. We have a much more 'liberal' interpretation of free speech here than Europe.

Obviously, you didn't account for the fact that the US has by far the largest porn industry in the world. Also, I've never heard of anybody having anything done to them for speaking about legalization of pot, for instance.

With regard to political affiliation, it is unlawful to make personnel decisions based upon it, unless it interferes with you doing your job.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
