Longhorn isn't out only because they can't get it to work properly. That's why you are all waiting.

longhorn isn't out because they're still making things work as flawlessly as they can.

do you want us to mention how long it took to get OS X.1 out? and the false start that was copland?

Do I care what you think?

The fact is that Asher is accusing Apple of doing something that Microsoft has done when they have been able to do it (they can't with Longhorn because it is a radical change). The fact that hardly anyone upgraded from 98 to ME is because ME sucked. That doesn't change the fact that MS was doing exactly the same as Apple is being accused of doing.

Do we really need a new version of Office every couple of years?

Of course it's only bad if Apple does it....

Apple vs. Microsoft threads are dumb. Throw rocks at them.

And people upgraded to XP because it doesn't suck.

You just indirectly proved that people buy MS products when they want to, not because they have to. That's another debate of course, but this is going to come back and bite you in the ass.

If MS and Apple did the same thing, Windows XP SP2 would not be free. Hell, not only is it free, MS is paying to put bundle it on CDs in magazines, and spending hundreds of millions to advertise its availability.

Apple, on the other hand, makes what would be a service pack to MS, releases them as often as MS makes service packs, and charges $129 for it -- they don't even offer an upgrade package, to optimally rip users off.

The difference is, Microsoft still supports old versions, Apple doesn't. And even then, Microsoft offers a steep discount if you upgrade, and Apple just has you buy a whole new one each time.

Get real: software companies release "new" versions because they want to make money.

Apple does it, Microsoft does it, Adobe does it. Of course in your little world this means that Apple eats at Satan's table.

The difference is, Microsoft supports old versions for things like security fixes. They still release Win98 fixes. Does Apple release OS 9 fixes? Hell, they don't even release 10.0 fixes!

Further, there's such a thing as overdoing it. Apple doesn't provide "upgrade packages" like virtually every other application company. Not only this, but they change like 2% of the code at the max and they want to charge the same price all over again.

Apple sits at satan's table because they have:
                1) Frequent updates that add too little
                2) High price, and no discount for upgrading
                3) Refusal to support old versions, essentially forcing people to upgrade

Actually, they finalized 9 in 9.2.2 and deemed it 'fixed'. I've yet to see any bugs in it, either.

The support for X, however, was X.1 and the supoprt for X.1 was X.2, but they have continued to support X.2.

My team here in Iraq got issued an I-POD to use with loudspeaker broadcasts and what not. Personally, I found it less easy to use then the Sony competetor and more expensive then the Dell competetor. 20GB is nice to have but after 7 months I've only used 6GB of it and left 14GB empty.

Actually I remember quite a while back some kind of SCSI/PCI card tower where you could plug it into a USB port and have full access to the upgrade cards as if they were inside your comp... probably a buggy system (hence why there's been no further mention of it elsewhere) but then most people plan ahead for upgrade cards too...

                            • I think I could probably upgrade if I really wanted to. I already changed the hard drive.

But I can't be arsed just for the sake of an ipod, which I probably wouldn't use that much.
