Can't you just buy a $30 Firewire PCI card?

Hell, even SoundBlaster cards come with a "free" Firewire port.

        It's non-existent, but who cares.

i don't particularly want an ipod, but that actually has to do with a feature of it.

that feature being the one that erases the entire damn ipod when its connected to a fresh install and brand new itunes library.

Not with a 4G imac. It's packed in so close that you need some weird upgrade kit. I can't be arsed getting one, and I'm due for a new computer since this one is getting long in the tooth and it would be needlessly wasting money - I upgraded the HD last year and it will do for now. Having said that the machine is over four years old and still runs most new programs at an acceptable speed.

I wonder if that was my point.

Your point is moot. If I'd bought a computer for the same price that was as easily upgradeable, I'd have to run Windows on it, and that is a price I don't care to pay.

Besides, I'm not spending any more money on this machine as it's reaching the end of its useful life. 5 years is pretty good for a computer these days.

That's true Q^3, but a powermac would be ridiculous overkill for me. The imac has been a faithful servant and I only ever had to replace the hard drive (thanks to the ****ing big blackout last year).

this is where, philosophically, we differ. i find it heinously idiotic to have a box which cannot be upgraded.

I love my iPod more every day. In a couple days, it's going to be serving as a portable hard drive for all the digital photos I'll be taking on vacation.

                            Sounds familiar.

I've been doing that for over 2 years already.

BTW, Seagate and Creative Labs just signed a contract to use Seagate's 5GB 1" harddrives, 1GB more than Hitachi's 4GB used in the Mini.

Word has it they're cheaper, too.

But who cares, since nobody apparently wants to buy their badly designed crap.
