I have a funny feeling that the conservatives will ignore my post.
"The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. How many crimes, wars, murders, how many miseries and horrors might the human race had been spared by the one who, upon pulling up the stakes or filling in the ditch, had shouted to his fellow men: 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are lost if you forget the fruits of the earth belong to all and that the earth belongs to no one." - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

hmm. in light of this information I support a pre-emptive attack on Canada.

Actually I supported this attack before this information.

Am I the only one who sees the oxymoron in "Putin reveals intelligence...".

Apparently you've made the mistake of only reading headlines. The U.S. State Department had no knowledge of this intelligence. Sirotnikov already addressed that I believe:

This seems to completely ignore 1991. I think our utter decimation of his military plus 12 years of crippling sanctions, no-fly zones, and intermittent bombings gave him plenty of reason to hate us.

Er, al-Qaeda is absolutely a Sunni organization, as are most terrorist groups operating against the U.S. (Don't mention Hezbollah, I said 'operating against the U.S.' for a reason.)

If he was so rational and bent on mere survival, why didn't he withdraw from Kuwait then in the first Gulf War? He had to think either A) we wouldn't be willing to fight despite going through all the expense of mobilizing half a million men or B) Iraq would win if we did attack. Neither of these are rational conclusions.

The fact that no one in the US government has provided any support whatsoever to the Russian claims when, if true, they would a big political boost to Bush means that they're pretty clearly the kind of BS that we should expect from Putin.

Of course I'm taking this with a grain of salt; don't get me wrong. I just responded to his claim that the U.S. was monolithically denying this.

If the Whitehouse is not jumping on this does that mean that Bush is not a "patholical liar"? Surely if he was he would use this questionable information for political benefit. The left cannot have it both ways. Perhaps Bush is not really the scum of the earth. Maybe the terrorists themselves have some responsibility for this so called war on terror. I know that is a radical thought but I thought I would throw it out for discussion...

                    • I don't believe Bush is a pathological liar. I believe he's prone to lie as a rational means to an end. Assuming that Putin's claims are bull****, Dubyah may figure the backlash when it's exposed will be worse than the gains from jumping on it know.

Replace "Dubyah" with "the grey mandarins behind his throne", if you prefer.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

No, a State department official said the State department hadn't received anything...

                          • I heard about this. Since Iraq was indeed planning TERRORIST attacks against America, then we had every right to invade them. End of Story.

Though I think Bush is a liar and a buffon for not showing us this information until now. This chemical weapons BS is quite a diaster for him now.

This doesn't mean I like Bush any better, but at least the War on Iraq makes some more sense. Obviously it is better to draw out the enemy against our soldiers in the Middle East instead of in our streets against our citizens. I thought his unsubstantiated claims of ties to Iraq and terrorism, and Iraq and Chemical Weapons, made this war look pretty pointless, and his percieved constant lying lost any faith I had in him.

Either way, Bush is a terrible leader.

Because you don't just plan terrorist attacks against other countries unless you plan on actually attacking them.

Give me an example of a nation planning a terrorist attack that didn't intend on doing it.
