"The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. How many crimes, wars, murders, how many miseries and horrors might the human race had been spared by the one who, upon pulling up the stakes or filling in the ditch, had shouted to his fellow men: 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are lost if you forget the fruits of the earth belong to all and that the earth belongs to no one." - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Am I the only one who sees the oxymoron in "Putin reveals intelligence..."."And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961

Yes, we all know that every info, especially sensitive intelligence is awlays passed only through the State Dept. because it is such a non-beaurocratic body which never leaks to the press, and has high clearance.Originally posted by johncmcleod
But I really don't think Saddam hates us. After all, we supported the Baathist coup that put him in power, gave Saddam plenty of support and weapons and allowed US corporations to sell him chemicals for WMD.

And the terrorists that attack the US do so because of religious reason. They are usually radical Shiites.

He is a secular sunni and probably has very little devotion to his religion anyway. Saddam is the opposite of Osama bin Laden, and Saddam is an enemy to any radicalist terrorist such as ObL.

And even if, for no apparent reason, Saddam made an unprovoked attack on the US, it would just give Bush the perfect excuse to invade Iraq. Saddam would get flattened, and America would have the world's support. Saddam is a bad guy but he is rational and he isn't suicidal.Last edited by Darius871; June 20, 2004, 04:49.

The fact that no one in the US government has provided any support whatsoever to the Russian claims when, if true, they would a big political boost to Bush means that they're pretty clearly the kind of BS that we should expect from Putin.Stop Quoting Ben

If the Whitehouse is not jumping on this does that mean that Bush is not a "patholical liar"? Surely if he was he would use this questionable information for political benefit. The left cannot have it both ways. Perhaps Bush is not really the scum of the earth. Maybe the terrorists themselves have some responsibility for this so called war on terror. I know that is a radical thought but I thought I would throw it out for discussion...

I don't believe Bush is a pathological liar. I believe he's prone to lie as a rational means to an end. Assuming that Putin's claims are bull****, Dubyah may figure the backlash when it's exposed will be worse than the gains from jumping on it know.
Replace "Dubyah" with "the grey mandarins behind his throne", if you prefer. Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

I heard about this. Since Iraq was indeed planning TERRORIST attacks against America, then we had every right to invade them. End of Story.
Though I think Bush is a liar and a buffon for not showing us this information until now. This chemical weapons BS is quite a diaster for him now.
This doesn't mean I like Bush any better, but at least the War on Iraq makes some more sense. Obviously it is better to draw out the enemy against our soldiers in the Middle East instead of in our streets against our citizens. I thought his unsubstantiated claims of ties to Iraq and terrorism, and Iraq and Chemical Weapons, made this war look pretty pointless, and his percieved constant lying lost any faith I had in him.
Either way, Bush is a terrible leader."Our words are backed with NUCLEAR WEAPONS!"

How is it different from Saddam planning a conventional attack?
Give me an example of a nation planning a terrorist attack that didn't intend on doing it."Our words are backed with NUCLEAR WEAPONS!"
