AFAIK, we were never serious with the threat of trade wars. However, we are strong enough now to stop being pushed by the US, and to tell the US "don't go there" (just like the US does with us).

In the end, nobody wants a commercial MAD.

EU has won more WTO fights with the US than I care to count and this is because you are too protectionist. Almost socialist. You have problems competing in free markets.
