One friend told me that a professor here, has a Honda Civic and she commutes from home to the university, back and forth every weekday for a total round trip of 90 miles.

This professor said that she only fills up her car twice a month because of the efficiency of the Honda Civic hybrid.

Let's see. Fuel tank capacity: 13.2 gallons.
      Distance: 90/day * 5 days/week * 2.15 weeks (half a month, since 4.3 weeks per month on average). = 967.50 miles per half a month.

Mileage: 967.50/13.2 = 73 mpg, if she used every last drop of gas in her tank.

      I call BS.

Even Honda only claims 600 miles on a full tank with the 2003 Civic Hybrid, under perfect circumstances.

She probably filled it up when it was half empty or two-thirds empty.

My cousin is an oil billionarie in Texas.

(Yes it's true! She's an MBA and was working as a controller for a company over there, and one day she accidentally smashed a parked car outside a mall. The car owner asked her out to handle the insurance paperwork over a lunch, and he turned out to be an oil billionarie in her age. My cousin is a real babe, so he dropped his GF and joined my family. Hey, they should sell their love story to Hollywood!).

I should send her an E-mail and ask to her to send a cubic meter of gas in support for a poor cousin... The gas for my car is soon 11 kr/litre (1kr=1/7.5 $ or 9.2 € or something) I spent the Eastern with her dad, after all.

oh -- and this professor's Civic hybrid is a manual -- so even more mileage than an automatic hybrid

If she filled the car up when the tank was half full then she'd be filling the tank more, not less, often. i.e In Asher's stats it would double the expectation for the mpg value.

Well, yeah, she would fill it up more often.

                    that's a given

                    • Well then I would like to talk with the professor and see how she fills her car up only twice a month given the miles in her round trip.

What about inelasticity Imran, where people have no choice but to buy this product. And this is quite clearly a case of a cartel that should be broken up...it is anticompetitive...you know, that thing you capitalists always go on about. Practice what you preach.

                            • "Clearly" It ain't a cartel if you can't prove they are getting together to set prices. The petroleum industry has MANY different players. And I notice a difference in prices among just about every pump station .

And are you really asserting that crude prices aren't going up? The only cartel is OPEC.... and the only way to break that up is by invading every country .

Just because the good is inelastic doesn't mean jack. It's just a characteristic of the industry.
