  • Soaring Gas Prices = Soaring Profits

LOS ANGELES : As prices at the pump have soared, so have profits at California's top five oil companies, according to a study by a Los Angeles consumer group.

The study by the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights (FTCR) compared oil company profit reports and gasoline prices over the last two years.

The five companies included in the study -- Shell, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Chevron Texaco and BP -- refine 90 percent of California's gasoline, controlling the majority of its gas stations, the group said.

The group found that in 2003, an average 35 percent increase in gas prices pumped up average company profits nearly tenfold -- by 926 percent.

By comparing Securities and Exchange Commission filings on profits with Energy Information Administration gasoline price data, the FTCR found that on a quarterly basis, each spike in gas prices resulted in a spike in company profits.

Gasoline companies are expected to release their profitability reports for the first quarter of 2004 beginning at the end of the month.

"If pump prices stay up, then 2004 will (be) the most profitable year yet for the oil companies," said FTCR petroleum industry consultant Tim Hamilton, who led the study.

"These levels of profits are likely to continue in the West, regardless of any actions taken by OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) between now and the elections, since these spikes in profits are driven by refinery manipulation, not crude shortages," he said.

Pump prices have been climbing across the nation, rising 31.5 cents per gallon since late December, but average gas prices in freeway-bound California hit 2.21 dollars per gallon (3.8 liters), compared with 1.82 dollars in the rest of the United States.

Well, needless to say, this confirms many of my suspicions(sp?). Soaring gas prices are driven by good old fashioned market manipulation as oil companies are seeking to add profits. In the end, a bunch of oil executives are laughing all the way to the bank as consumers take hits in their pocketbooks.

This ought to be a crime.
To us, it is the BEAST.

How is it market manipulation if they are raising prices and consumers still are buying it? Supply and demand, Sava.

Do some math. If a 35% increase in price resulted in a 926% increase in profits, then profit margins were extremely thin in the first place.

I'm disappointed in you, Sava. Here I was this morning, thinking this is all a very convenient thing for the white house and our Halliburton and Saudi masters. The Bush campaign blames the Dems for not letting big oil rape ANWAR, US oilfields will get back into production, which will throw a lot of work Halliburton's way, the Ay-rabs are making money out the wazoo, and lots of folks will follow the news about record oil prices and blame them uppity Ay-rabs. Everyone wins. And you didn't even see it.

Creating artificial shortages, or deliberately making sure capacity is inadequate to meet demand are both manipulative practices.

Absolutely funny here in California how nobody comes in and build new competing refineries. Of course, they'd have to get terminal space and right of way for their pipelines from the existing players, but that's just a minor detail.

I read an article that said oil prices were artificially inflated--the idea, there being no major production cuts, plus the opening of Iraqi fields, plus some other things, meant sooner or soonerer the price would crash.

Of course, I agree with you, Sava--I would enjoy nothing more than seeing rich oil jackasses (except for the ones in Arkansas, of course, they support our local economy tremendously! ) to go broke.

It's not our fault you don't have domestic oil and you choose socialist governments that tax petrol so hard that you can hear the dinosaurs scream.

It sounds more like extortion to me... a big cartel if you ask me...

It's disturbing you feel this is all right.

we have domestic oil...so HAHA and if you would all drive with car that ride around 12 km to 1 litre (which i kinda normal around here) then you would have only need domestic oil...and not middle east oil

and about the petrol tax...it helps to push people in the public transit....

I read that to. IIRC, the gist was that the spike was based solely on the fear of a possible disruption in supply that shows no real sign of happening.

I guess I could look at it that way. Although I must first cross over to the dark-side.

I'm really only moderately interested in this. I just want to put the information out there and then let the people decide whether or not this is an outrage. If the public doesn't mind getting butt****ed, then I'm not going to waste my energy being mad at a bunch of oil companies. If this is how people want things done, then fine.

I don't drive that much anyways, so I could almost care less. But of all the silly things the "public" gets outraged about (Janet Jackson's boob for christ's sake!), they don't seem to care they are basically being extorted.

Bah... Soaring profits? Didn't you mean, soaring prices elsewhere?

After all, as the gas prices rise, so too will the prices of other things since businesses, to make a profit, have to raise their prices to thus not go bankrupt. Sure some of the oil nations are getting off better, but not really since even though price hikes don't really adjust consumption much here (we don't have buses and trains that are good for much, after all) it means the dollar begins to be worth less... thus the dollars that buy those $42US barrels start being worth in real terms about $40 or $35 as time goes on.

Going to agree and disagree DBTS... on gas taxes... with as much as people like driving and look down on bus etc use for some stupid reason as 'lower class' they're just willing to pay more for their stupid status symbols, just like all the morons buying SUVs and then complaining about the price of gas.
