Because you are speaking to me on a message board. Therefore, at some level, you do care what I think, or else you wouldn't be conversing with me.
Your turn.

I actually converse here because I'm a loser and have nothing better to do than to try to inflame people with my insults. Every so often I put together a coherent thought... but I'm mostly just a bunch of crap.
Well I wasn't talking to you. We all know why YOU are here .

You're pretty simple minded if you think the only reason to converse with someone is to find out what they think. That you play this game would suggest you know better though.
For me the OT is a great place to find a laugh, do some mental masturbation on irrellevent (as far as I could do anything about them) topics, play games, and just plain old speak my mind when something weighs on it. If I wanted to talk to someone I cared listening to I'd speak to a friend or someone On-Topic (Civ3) where there are answers to the questions instead of just a bunch of opinions and more questions. Who I talk to here doesn't matter, as long as there's a dialogue to run with.

Well then why converse? Sure some people want to tell people things, but they also, in that sense, wish to gauge the response.

And, in essense, the dialogue is necessary because it provides you with feedback to continue your goals. The feedback being what others think. Without that knowledge, you wouldn't stick around here. After all, you can talk to a wall, if you don't want feedback.

Nothing dictates that a person can't just speak their mind. I actually do talk to walls quite a bit, and they satisfy my needs well enough. They even give feedback. It's just easier on my family (I do care about what they think), and less likely to result in my being sent back to a psychiatrist, put on medication, and/or re-admitted to a mental institution if I'm talking to someone real. :P
Maybe you can't talk to me without caring what I think, as you seem to be implying, but the reverse isn't true. Caring what I think has got to be the biggest waste of time.

You mean something to quote so I don't get banned for spamming? That's hardly caring what you think.

Obviously you are not talking to walls here but to other people. If you simply wanted to 'speak your mind' without any response one wonders why you choose a public forum.

Of course it is. You are posting here. I do not think there is a shortage of walls where you are. So what makes this place more attractive. Better yet, what make this more attractive than 'Word'.
You DO care what the people on this forum think of your thoughts, at least subconciously, or else you wouldn't be here. Though, if you wish, you can deny it to yourself. It won't do you much good though.
Put it simply, when you say you don't care what others think of your posting on a public message board, I say bollocks.

You think? I'm not sure yet. You remind me of a wall I once talked to. I'm pretty sure there are real people here, but no proof so far that you qualify.

I never said I didn't. I said I didn't care what you think. I would have ignored you, but I was scared 'everyone else' (by that I mean not you) would think I somehow cared about what you thought...

Nice cop out. By continuing to respond to me, you show that you do care what I think, in some way or another. Or else you wouldn't respond. Game. Set. Match.
If you didn't care what I thought, you wouldn't 'waste your time' by having a conversation with me. Now you may choose to spin it as you are having a good time or mental masturbation, but those aren't adequate counter-explinations, because even those activities, if they in conversation form, show some interest in the other party's responses. Or else there would be no need to have the conversation at all.

The expected results between caring about what other people may think, and caring about what you think, could both result in a response or not. It was a joke in any case (in relation to our conversation), as I'm not worried that anyone will see this conversation and base an opinion of me on it. If they do, they obviously aren't worth worrying about, and if they don't, well there's nothing to worry about.
You're still talking to me... so obviously you do (up until the point you stop talking to me) .
