Appearing on CNN's "American Morning," an attorney for Pfc. Lynndie England said the Abu Ghraib photos were "staged" by intelligence officials who were running the prison at the time. England was photographed holding what appears to be a leash attached to the neck of a naked Iraqi prisoner. She faces four charges, including committing an indecent act and assaulting Iraqi detainees on multiple occasions. "They are psychological operations photos," said attorney Giorgio Ra'Shadd.

The other line of **** her lawyer is floating out is how she (and the other female soldiers) were victims too, because they were poow widdle girls who were less likely to question or object to orders from those big, nasty, macho, horrible men who gave them orders. *snif*

I'm guessing these trials won't last long if they can not come up with a better defense than that.

This is probably true. She looks so oppressed and unhappy on these pictures.
I don't think that's a mitigating factor for engaging in kinky s & m games with the prisoners.

Not specifically, no. But I think it's a reasonable argument to say that such a situation is likely to lead to a break-down of order, and whatever kind of chaos ensues.
The choice that seems to be most bandied about is that the guards were stupid. The other alternative is that the photos were to be used either to pressure the inmates as part of their interrogation or perhaps illegally i.e. non-sanctioned blackmail.
In a book I was reading once than German Enlist man was part of the Germany Army Command took picture of SS men mistreating people. The SS was unable to stop him from takeing pictures of take his cammeor away as he have the legal authority to take picture anywhere in the occup territory.

There's not much of a defense that would help them at trial in the face of the evidence in hand that's already in the public domain, let alone in the investigative reports. This is for all the post-trial posturing and attempts to politicize the issue of the poow widdle weservist victims and the big bad army.
I'd guess they're looking for mitigation in sentencing, and/or working the talk show/radio circuit, since they'll all need to find new careers in any event.

I heard on NPR that the soldier who took the pictures was taking them as evidence of what was going on, or so his father claims.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

If anything, their defense should focus on how undermanned the prison was. 1 personel for every hundred prisoners is a bit ridiculous.
The military is very unfriendly to that sort of defense - the issue at trial will be the specific conduct of the soldiers, not some general complaint about policy and manpower or supervision issues.
