I was reading the About Aployton page and saw this in news.
The relevant words are emboldened.
BOTTOM AMAZON ADS REMOVED, GOOGLE ADS EXPERIMENT
(21 March 2004, 10:05 | About) As their effect wasnt very important compared to the increase in loading time of pages, the bottom ads from Amazon and other retailers that showed up in the Default, Light, Default-Special and Light-Special styles of the forums, have been removed.
Also, as you might have noticed, we`re running a small experiment with Google ads in forum posts in the Off-Topic forum. They`ll stay for a few more days. If proven worthy, they might be in one of the styles as a partial replacement to pop-ups. - MarkGThere's no game in The Sims. It's not a game. It's like watching a tank of goldfishes and feed them occasionally. - Urban Ranger

btw, seeing what is going on at the SDMB (they are charging to use the forums), I'd much rather deal with the occasional post ad.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

And as far as "endorsing" is concerned...I really can't see this as being any more of a problem than with any other ads. It's an ad, I'm not endorsing anything. If anyone, MarkG would be the one doing the endorsing (considering he's the only one with any control over it).
I think it can even add a little humour, as Asher has clearly shown.
Edit: WTF!!11! I take that back! Anything but Civ3, I hate Civ3!

It was amusing for the first 20 posts or so. Mostly due to Asher's reaction to it (bitter parody).
One would expect the site owner to display the level of maturity he requires of other posters though.I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).
