  • Lombardi Handicappers' Madness: Sign-Up Open

Yes, ladies & gentlemen, it is once again the time of the year for the greatest spectacle in college sports. Ever consider that the NCAA doesn't want to do football playoffs because they don't want to do anything that would overshadow the basketball tournament in any way? It just occurred to me now...

Eh, whatever. Let the madness begin.

We are now entering our fifth glorious year, and if I knew what the stone was to symbolize that, I'd bring a picture of it over now, so I won't, and instead, I'll tell you that once again we are at CBS Sportsline and that you can access the pool's website at:

You must be on the player roster in order to access the pool website. If you did not participate in the pool last year, send me a PM with your name and your e-mail address (it must be an actual working e-mail address) and I will send you an invitation. Important note: If you did participate last year, you do not need to sign up again. Simply go to CBS Sportsline, log into your account, and then either cut-and-paste the above URL or select "Lombardi Handicappers' Madness!" from the Fantasy tab.

Obviously, at this time the brackets are not available, and they will not be until early evening on March 14th, Selection Sunday. I highly recommend though that you get your spot in the pool set early, as that week is particularly busy for me in terms of school commitments and CBS's servers are likely to be busy.

The scoring rules are unchanged from last season. All games except the play-in game must be picked prior to the start of the tournament, and correct picks are scored on the following scale:
    • First Round: 2 points
    • Second Round: 4 points
    • Sweet Sixteen: 9 points
    • Elite Eight: 12 points
    • Final Four: 16 points
    • Championship Game: 20 points
This means that a perfect bracket will net you a score of 300 points. There are no bonuses of any kind - only pick the upsets if you see them happening that way. In the case of a tie at the end of the tournament, the combined score from the championship game will be used as a tiebreaker.

We could be witnessing history this year. I don't believe that we've ever had a men's tournament where two teams entered with unbeaten records, and Stanford & St. Joseph's both have a chance to do just that.

    Off we go!

In 1976 Indiana and Rutgers both entered the tournament unbeaten and wound up playing each other in the national semifinal game. But I don't think there has ever been a year in which two unbeaten teams played for the championship.

Thanks for the history lesson, Adam. Fortunately, the rules have been changed so that the regionals are matched up based on the rankings of the four #1's - so if Stanford and St. Joe's both get through their conference tourneys unbeaten, they wouldn't play each other until the championship.

Though Stanford needs to be careful - Washington St. is playing 'em real tough (Cougars down only three at the half).

Quite a finish to the Stanford-Wazzou game... still on track for 2 unbeatens.

I got an invitation from CBS and went to the website and it showed me logged in without brackets being set.

I assume this means that I'm in and have to do nothing else until the brackets are set.

                            Why?

How about Utah in the Championship game?
