I lived there for three years and had a good time. Never experienced any bother at all.

PH - 15 or 20 years ago I rather felt the way you do now. What I have learnt is that a lot depends on becoming able to influence people and so have some control over how they respond to you. It is something everyone has to some extent, part conscious and part instinctive, but can be improved with practice. You don't have to like your work colleagues, it can be easier with people you despise, but you do have to be determined to persuade others to do things your way. When you can get to the point where they don't even recognise either the carrot or the stick, just that they will go with what you are saying then you have got it.

Provost: I sympathise entirely. If you're thinking of Northampton, keep going South... .

Just hope they're not too smart for you down south because then you'll have to be in the middle.

Have you thought about going west? What's west? The Welch? Are Welch chicks hot?

There's just so much to consider...

Lots of sheep in Wales...and Spink

West is Manchester, Leeds or Liverpool but there hasn't been anything of any use jobwise going on there.

I take issue with the idea that its not your accent which matters, but your frame of mind. Certainly, Accent is never the only thing which can cause problems, and your state of mind can also be a problem .. however, my experience had nothing to do with state of mind, and everything to do with South hating idiots .. I wouldn't mind, but for god sake, im from Chester.

So, yes you can be discriminated against for your accent, and yes your right, frame of mind can also cause you problems.

Thought it was about time for one of these to come around again! Make a decision. I'm going to say the opposite of TCO here; I don't think the city life would suit you. It would be even more hellish. Move to somewhere like Cromer or Rhyl..

If you can figure out a steady income of 200 English lira (or whatever) per month, you can live good.

Sounds like you've got it figured. Move away, probably somewhere nearer the south. Living will be more expensive, but wages will be higher.

Or you could move further North, to someone like Edinburgh?
