And how often is it used.

A lot more often than Gaelic in Scotland. Probably less so than Welsh, but I'm not sure how common Welsh usage is. If two Welsh people are talking, what's the chances of them using Welsh? It is in a few regions it's common, or over the whole country?

Depends where you are. In north and west wales it's very likely they'll speak welsh.

I never hear it on campus except before examinations, but all the time when down in the town. All road markings and street signs are bilingual.

Friend of mines brother went to Aber to study linguistics and learnt Welsh whilst he was there to make life easier.

I know I'm arguing the opposite case, but in this town it isn't really necessary for an individual to speak Welsh.

Quite regularly though, business/banks which fail to provide Welsh "translations" for their customers get vandalised by Welsh nationalists.

Another feature is the "reclaiming the streets" that the local teenagers do whenever term-time finishes and students go home. Three Saturdays a year...

Fact is, you could probably pick any spot in the UK and compare it to Texas (full of self satisfaction).

It's almost impossible to find 2 areas that have any kind of time or respect for each other.

We seem to have a stronger north-south divide as well. Well, draw a line from King's Lynn to Bristol and there you have it.

Let's see, we are looking for an area that is:
                      - obnoxious
                      - wealthy
                      - believes it's a separate country
                      - fiercely conservative
Not just picking on you Spiffor, but where some of you get the obnoxisous from? Sure some Texans aren't the easiest to get along with when you disagree with them but I don't find them any more obnoxious than other folks in the US or the people I have known from other countries. They just speak their minds and don't just follow things. Don't get me wrong, I'm an Arkie who loves to pick on Texans whenever i can but some of the best people I know have come from Texas.
