But again, in terms of short term getting to sleep one night when you need to, a couple of over the counter sleeping pills is very good.
The only thing I use my bed for is to sleep in. And since I have not been looking for one night stands the past year or so, I don't use my bed for any other purpose.

A Hot shower is pretty good. I like to lay in bed and read and try to relax with deep, diaphrammatic breathing. Not necessarily meditation, but a controlled, mindful breathing with relaxation of the muscles.

Try and tire yourself out a bit more. A good workout a couple of hours before you normally go to sleep, followed by the hot shower will have falling asleep sooner rather than later.

As many have said, it is important to have a sleep routine.

Also important is this: your bed is for two things and two things only--sleep and sex. Do not watch TV, read, ruminate, meditate, or masticate in bed; these things make it harder fall asleep.

If you go to bed and can not fall asleep within 10-15 minutes, DO NOT continue to lie there trying to fall asleep. Get up, go to another room, and do some quiet activity--i.e. read, preferably something boring. Go back to bed only when you feel sleepy.

Extremely hot bath and something to read that is mindless. As you start to really zone out, get up put a towel on and fall into bed half-wet and sleep. Do it right away so you are still hot and sleepy. Don't spedn a lot of time getting dry, cold and waking up again.

                    l-theanine

if you can't get it at the health food store drink decaffeinated tea which is loaded with it. none of that garbage that comes in a bag, get the loose leaf/asian style

                    also melatonin works wonders

both are very effective for knocking you out in a natural way to help you get good sleep.

I fall asleep within a minute of deciding to.

Then again, I only decide to sleep once I'm nodding off already.

Also, I almost always sleep with the light on. I always lie down with the intention of reading a bit before bed, and before I get through the first page I decide to rest my eyes for a bit...

Yeah, melatonin is excellent. As a chronic insomniac (wake up usually once a night), I 've had excellent results with the stuff. Second only to daily exercise.

Sleep sucks. 1/3 of your life and its spent unconscious - it's a goddam travesty, if you ask me. Rather than worrying about your "lost" sleep, rejoice in your extra time!
