    • Haliburton would be one of the major benificiaries of a manned mission to Mars. Go figure.

I'll respond to this, though, since you've made it oh-so-very convenient.

The 1960s program to put an astronaut on the moon met with a similar mixed response. A Harris poll taken in 1967 found people were about evenly divided on plans to send an astronaut to the moon. The U.S. space program finally landed men on the moon's surface in July 1969

          • Do we want to go for a domination victory or a spaceship victory? Obviously, cultural and diplomatic are out of the question.

I just don't understand the ones who aren't actually threatened by the progress in question.

Yes, and no one ever benefitted from going to the Moon.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

I was always partial to the Domination route to victory.

Why not? We already built the UN wonder.

...Sorry, bit carried away there. Still, why hasn't bfg9000 replied to the idea that moving offworld is a good insurance policy when, above all other things, we've got a supervolcano that can cover the US of A in molten ash ticking away?
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
