  • Uh oh, Yellowstone Caldera Awakens

Just saw on the MSNBC scroll of several earthquakes hitting NW Wyoming. Apparently not big quakes, but is the Yellowstone caldera awakening? That's the last thing we need, but if it does go, better during the winter than crop season...

I've been waiting for this. Bring on the genetic bottleneck baby, I wanna see some evolution in action! Whoo! Bring on da mutants!

    *waves little flag*
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Better during the winter than the crop season? I guess so... but we're all dead if it really does go. Six feet of ash man, six feet of ash.

To bad Oerdin is gone. He'd tell us all not to worry, and we'd be fine with that because we'd believe our resident Geologist... Are there any other geologist that can tell us not to worry?

Oerdin would probably not look at the info in time.

uh, yeah. Not a smiliar name at all. Maybe I'm thinking of some other giant monster.

I would worry about Bush's plans for next year more than I would worry about the caldera.

Mothra A caldera is the largest type of volcano, when one blows it can literally cover the continent in ash destroying crops and clogging everything. Let's put it this way, Krakatoa was a burp in comparison. Yellowstone Lake is a caldera...the continental crust in that region is very thin which is why they have geysers, hot streams, etc, because the magma chamber is very close to the surface. As it fills up after a blast and reaches capacity, the whole region begins to bulge until the crust breaks. They know the caldera has been bulging because they can chart where the lake was compared to where it is now. Forests on one side of the lake have become submerged as the caldera has elevated one end. They're measuring a highway that crosses another caldera in Long Valley, Calif., and it too is rising.

A caldera is a very large volcanic crater, generally with two or more vents.
