    Well, dad likes:

Elvis (sis-in-law got him Elvis-related stuff)
    Collecting stamps
    Watching the Weather Channel
Playing with his digital camera (mom already got him stuff for that, though)

    Um...
Clothing. He's a straight guy and ergo doesn't know how to dress stylishly.

buying clothing for guys is risky. Especially older guys who can be picky about what they wear.

I still say to buy many small gifts. They all add up.

Oh no, I've been burned on the clothing route before. I've gotten him stylish clothes, and he steadfastly refuses to wear them. He's very specific about the dullness of his wardrobe.

He specifically asked for grey dress shirts with button-down collars. Hopeless...

Have you tried working the stamp collecting angle?

yep, the weather channel clued me in to his stylish sensibilities .

just get him grey dress shirts with button-down collars then . Many guys are happy to get what they ask for. Not like women who might say they want one thing, but actually want another.

Re: the clothing. What about your mother. A woman's nagging is usually enough to get a man to wear something. Trust me, I used to work in a menswear store.

                          Fabulously straight, of course

Boris - Get him a gift certificate somewhere. That way you can show him you care because of the price and he can pick out exactly what he wants.

Boris- I think if you check somewhere like Gibraltar issued a commemorative Elvis coin.

Also hasn't the Grenadines or Aruba or one of those places issued Elvis stamps?

Howzabout some music/rock'n'roll themed foreign stamps?

What about food? Is he a secret gourmand? Does he have a secret fetish for chocolate ants, emu pate or quail in aspic? A deli gift certificate?

Is he a gardener? Gardener's balm, a new dibbler, a deluxe trowel....

Is he homo ludens? Would he relish a replica Isle of Lewis chessmen set? Alice in Wonderland playing cards?

Howabout a Redstone Press/Shambala Press box (available from MoMA, I think) ?

Tickets for Broadway/Off Broadway/Off Off Broadway, a year's subscription to Playboy, tartan socks and pom pom slippers, I don't know, I give up.
