  • False. Democracy is not Suffrage. It is people's power. A dictator backed by 100% of his people is more democratic than a president supported by 50% of his people. But that is purely theoretical anyway, so I'll move on.

kim jong-il is backed by 100% of the vote every time an election comes up.
roh moo-hyun won with less than 55% of the vote in the last election.

kim jong-il is the elected leader of democratic north korea.
roh moo-hyun is the elected leader of totalitarian south korea.

    • Here is a link about Quebec and Canada, O.B.

As you can see, Quebec's GDP growth is MUCH less than that of Canada as a whole.

        Me, the proletariat? Hmmmm....

Let's say there are the following classes:

        Exploited
        Poor
        Middle-Class
        High-Middle Class
        Medium bourgeoisie
        Millionaire class
        Billionaire class

I belong to the Medium bourgeoisie.
I don't understand your question about cereals, but I don't eat cereals neither, so I'll pass on this one.

Um AFAIK the Albertans don't fund Ontario. The Atlantics and Quebec for sure, but I don't know about Ontario.

It's a silly complaint. It's like complaining that Toronto funds the rest of Ontario. Sure it does, that's how democratic tax systems work.

And it's not like Alberta is mired in poverty.

          • Agathon... oops. I can't follow your Canadian economic debate threads on this forum anyway . I know that's how democratic tax systems work, but O.B. was acting like Quebec by itself would be a super-prosperous country. They need Canada (and Canada needs Quebec, I know).

            • "Everything should have its price": especially human rights. I suggest a certificate of Human Rights. The basic one costs 1000$ and allows you to circulate. The improved one costs 25 000$ and liberates you of conscription and death penalty. The Great one costs 10,000,000$ and gives you the right to arrest those with an Improved Certificate or less. Finally, the Phantasmagoric one costs 20 billions and allows you to rewrite the Constitution.

wouldn't this system therefore consign the masses of the poor to existence as people sans rights? in other words, slaves?

Thanks for your insight. I'm talking about what people think, not what they say out of fear.

I said "purely theoretical" just for that. To make sure that no one would tell me: Hey, in practice people fear despots, so they... they what? they obey. They do not support.
Caesar was a supported dictator, however. The people loved him. This is the kind of Despots I was thinking about.

If a Democracy is a Dictatorship of the majority, then a dictator backed by the majority is not much different.

                • If you have children, you get a lot more. I know people who raise their children only with Social Security money. That's not much, but still, more than someone with no education would get if he worked at 7-10$ an hour. This way, no one is forced to have a crappy job because he needs food.

if no one does the crappy jobs, who will pick up the trash? who will clean the schools ?

                  • caesar was loved? i suppose so. which is why he was assassinated.

democracy can have the tyrrany of the majority. however, it is decidedly different from a dictatorship backed by the majority in that in a democracy, a vocal minority can destabilize the regime or change the regime come next election. in a dictatorship, the only thing that allows that is a coup d'etat.

Some do the crappy jobs out of willingness, because they think the few more bucks are worth it. Others think they'd rather stay at home and that's fine with me.

                          And Caesar?

You obviously don't have a clue about what is Roman history. He was murdered by Republicans. When the plebs learned he had been killed, they burnt the house of his murderers and they had to flee. Then, they supported Caesar's lieutenant, Marcus Antonius in becoming the new dictator. The people loved Caesar, really. He was a popular dictator. Just as Napoleon was extremely popular in his times.
Heck, even Saddam has his partisans. Didn't you see them? On non American channels, you can see Sunni chanting "Saddam is our hero" or "Saddam is protecting us against the Crusaders".
And even Pinochet... there are plenty of dirty right wing farts in Chile who think he was the man they needed.

why would they think the few extra bucks are worth it? could it be that they might need the extra bucks? people would shovel **** and clean out the insides of an oil depot out of the goodness of their hearts? jesus, i need to find them, because i could really use their generosity to pay for my education.
