Ok, as far as the higher tolerance for lesbians -- that is based on the double standard in that it satisfies heterosexual men's sex fantasies and heterosexual men are the ones who dominate society.

Back to one of my initial questions -- to what extent is homophobia based on scapegoating in Western nations?

It seems that heterosexuals have desacralized marriage, but they want to ignore the reality that this is an internal problem, so they scapegoat homosexuals for this problem that originated from within heterosexual society.

I get homophobia whenever someone talks incessantly about their sexual orientations.

my theory still stands. homophobes are either gay themselves, or are scared they could turn gay.

I agree with you on the insecurity though, perhaps not an all conclusive theory but I do think it account's for quite alot.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

I may have seemed so, but I really meant no disrespect. It is the truth that most men find homosexuality (not homosexuals) somewhat repulsive. Why search for elaborate reasons for homophobia, when the truth could just as well be a general unease because, well because the thought of men banging men is just darn yucky, dammit.

I must admit that Laz's theory makes the most sense so far.

It'd be interesting to get a homophobe's opinion- however, I've never seen anyone admit to being a homophobe... "Yes, I think gays are sick, the Bible says it is an abomination and they are all going to hell, and if one ever hit on me I'd beat the snot out of them- but don't dare call me a homophobe, this is just my opinion, I don't hate fags at all!".

Well, there are a couple of Apolytoners on here that I perceive as being homophobic.

And Shi -- I can't swallow your explanation on why you think secular homophobia is more virulent than hard-religious homophobia.

Sexism is the root of homophobia. Men and women have defined roles within society. Feminists undermine it from one direction, and gays from another.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

                              Interesting possibility, Chegitz.
