"that non-heterosexuals are part of American culture more than many heterosexuals realize."

And it's probably also true that non-heterosexuals are part of American culture less than many non-heterosexuals realise.

I guess some people are ignorant about the significance of excluding a group of people from their own country's culture even when that group has made contributions towards that country's culture.

Yes. It is. Everyone forms their own cultures, ,or "tribes", of supporting and nurturing friends/family which share and accept. But the world is a cruel place regardless of who you are.

I support gay marriage fully, but shameless, self-promoting stunts do nothing to help the cause, and harm it in the long run.

              Shameless self-promoting??

By celebrating how non-heterosexuals have helped create the culture of United States??

Well from now on, make sure you never sing anymore patriotic songs written by non-heterosexuals if you think this is ridiculous.

Santa isn't gay, he's a communist! C'mon, he dresses in red and gives stuff away for free!
Or maybe he's a gay communist

So you didn't read this part of the article, DD??

"The answer, history tells us, is "of course." Consider the
Americans who have rained nothing but glory on our nation.
Think about the magnificent works of Walt Whitman, James
Baldwin and Hart Crane. They're just a handful of writers
who shaped the American vision and yet could not achieve
full citizenship because they were homosexual. How many
wedding parties have walked down the aisle to the music of
Virgil Thompson, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman or Aaron
Copland? Yes, we get to provide the music, but we are not
allowed to get married ourselves. The next time you stand,
hand on your heart, and sing "America the Beautiful,"
remind yourself that we owe those towering words to
                          Katharine Lee Bates, a lesbian."

would you prefer they did it with shame?

I don't think it's a 'stunt' at all. At first I thought I'd never heard of Fierstein, but when I looked him up I realized who he is. Seems to me like they got someone who recieved several accolades for playing the role of a woman in a broadway show and had him play the role of "Mrs. Claus" in the Thanksgiving day parade.

Why, exactly, is that so awful?
