I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Keep away from E-NE of about 13th and you'll be just fine. Even in this area, the worst that would happen is mugging. Off of the Adams Morgan strip a couple blocks to the north can be sketchy too.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Remember that Washington has always been a bar and brothel town. At times, parts of town have gained respectability, but only recently has the whole of downtown been an office park.

Thanks - that's handy to know. 13th street is only 3 blocks from the embassy

          It's like ancient Rome

Well, the area is being filled in. A new rather huge convention center was opened this year directly east of the embassy on 9th. But there's still a one or two block gap at 10th and 11th that is a wasteland, which breeds problems. There's not much to see there anyway, so it's easier to just keep you out of the area.

Don't they give embassy types a guard or something?

At least a tour guide- "Steer toward the fanciful structures, and away from the unsettling chaps."

Off the map to the north, but a very short cab ride away is Adams Morgan that has a strip of bars and restaurants. It has something for everybody. You can just walk along the strip and see what you like. Restaurant and bar district feel.

I heartily recommend the Madam's Organ. Had a great time there this spring.

Yes, there is nothing so satisfying as sexual intercourse sanctified by god through the gift of marriage and man via the payment of a nominal registration fee.
