How far is the Aussie embassy from Dupont Circle?
DuPont is at 19th Street -- 3 blocks from the embassy at 16th Street. But DuPont Circle is more mixed than 17th Street, for instance, which is only 2 blocks away. 14th Street used to have several bathhouses, before they went out of fashion. Now 14th Street is rather respectable (and is becoming a nice place to live) and is a mix. All of these areas are just north of the business district. The embassy is on the first block of zoned residential.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

As I was walking around today, I also remembered another piece of advice:

Do not give any money to anyone for any reason at any time.

It doesn't matter if it's a kid asking for money for a "youth club", a panhandler or someone with a laminated ticket saying the have to get home. I've seen tourists sucked into giving away money because they didn't know better.

Just something to know because of D.C.'s homeless problem....

On 22nd Street and N (I believe) there is a bar that serves buffalo beef and hamburgers-but they are famous for having the largest selection of beers in the world..almost 1000 different types..A must I say, and they are moderately priced as well..I forget the name of the place..anyone here know which bar I am talking about?

That is the Brickskeller. All beer is bottled. The crowd is rather youngish. It's not professional. Very casual. Slightly high decibel level. A great place to go. I closed the place down a couple of months ago.

I went to the New Zealand Embassy once. That's like the same thing, right?

My brother and half my friends from college live in No Va.
                  Wish I could go.

If you need to check the internet and have a smoke during your stay, there's a good cybercafe two short blocks north of the embassy on 17th street. Past the CVS and the sushi restaurant. They keep reasonably late hours and have a relaxed atmosphere.

I'll pm you my details, in case you can't check in.

ta, i'll probably won't reply to the PM's till I'm in transit. It will give me something to do in the layovers.

I should be free most evenings at about cocktail hour. Saturday 6 december is the free day at this stage.

What's the weather like over there? I'm proposing to bring my trench coat and buy a nice warm men's winter hat while I'm there. You can't get decent winter hats here.

The weather has been mixed. Some days it's 65, others it's 45 or 50. It hasn't gotten much colder than 40 lately. A trenchcoat should be fine.

It's been known to happen in DC, you just have to get lucky. I thought it might on Monday, but the weather may have changed.
