I like where I live, and I am at peace with my being an Australian. I sometimes even get defensive about certain stereotypes about this country.

          But I don't consider myself a patriot.

I find that too many times throughout history, patriotism has always had the potential to bring out the worst in some people.

Yeah, they're not anything close to abominations such as all those American "punk" bands with numbers after their names, but they're not exactly Refused or even Ebba Gron (which I am enjoying ATM).

So what are you trying to say there?

I don't know why. I said before. I don't paticularly love my country, but I can't help but get emotional hearing the national anthem and/or god bless america songs.

I really can't explain why I love my country, I just do.

                      [Rant Mode]

I don't like some of the logic posted here.

I shouldn't be patriotic because patriotism has the potential to bring out the worst in people?

                      Bull****!

                      Bull****!

                      Bull****!

                      Bull****!

                      Bull****!

Why should I hate my country because of what some misguided germans did in the 30's and 40's?

                      Bull****!

                      Bull****!

                      Bull****!

                      Bull****!

                      Bull****!

Hint: Patriotism only brings out the worst if you let it.

Alcohol can bring out the worst in people, yet I still drink it. Why? By some of you alls logic, I should avoid anything that brings out the worst in people. I don't go by that logic. I don't let the worst of me take control of my life.

I'm not some mindless slave who has no control over their anger and/or hatred. I would never let patriotism cause me to lose control of my judgement.

I think anyone who is intelligent and independant should not be judged harshly because they are patriotic.

In fact, I've had enough of this bull**** from some you people at Apolyton saying bad things about people who are patriotic.

I love the USA and I'm proud of it.

I will never let my patriotism get the better (or worse) of me.

There is a difference between patriotism and blind patriotism.

                        Contrast with a certain neighbour.

Also, Chretien has somehow managed to do many great and inspirational things in his last year in office. Once Queen Elizabeth retires to the royal mausoleum, I think we should put him on our money.

A country may be a pretty, alluring fallacy that we have all been brought up to love and serve [cough] diss [/cough], but it is a fallacy nonetheless, and it causes more harm than good to subdivide the human race into a series of nations. Arthur C Clarke puts it best when he says "there is hopeful symbolism in the fact that flags do not wave in a vacuum".

Oh, I by no means think that Canada is the greatest nation. I merely think it is a great nation.
