I'd go with 98SE, or 2000 if you can find it. I switched from ME -> XP on my old PIII 666 and the speed INCREASED and crashes decreased.

Now I know why my Master of Magic no longer works......I "upgraded" to Windows ME.

      ACK!

WinME. Just comparing the computer I have at home to the school computers... ME is infinitely more stable.

If you have a choice, though, get XP.

98SE. ME leaks memory the way a nuclear explosion leaks a mushroom cloud.

Don't forget that stability is also related to the quality of the hardware.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

                School computers are abused.

i realize bsods are often hardware based.

there's no excuse for a bsod after boot on a brand-spankin' new dell.

Neither. I moved from 98 to XP on a PIII 450. 98 wasn't bad but XP is fine (never used ME and don't see any need to now).

I know a lot of people have bad experience with Me. A lot more than those have bad experience with 98SE.

WinME has a serious memory problem. I had it on my old box for maybe . . . a week before I removed it and reinstalled 98SE. This same box had no problems running Win2K. ME blows.

on a related note, i downloaded an eval copy of virtualpc, and damn, if it's not cool. installed win98, win95, and msdos6.22/win3.1 on three different virtual pcs.

win98 is stable as a rock, but i haven't tried installing winme yet.
