AFAIK winME IS win98se with a few slight additions such as winMP7 (I think it was 7 maybe 6) that were downloadable from MS for free. So there should be no difference in stability.

Why would you back up to 98 ?
Woohoo, finally one on my side
Usually 100% are against what I think
I know two other people who have tried WinME. One of them used it a longer time than me, and also had fewer problems that in Win98SE
The other one had it for 1 hour, then he decided to uninstall it... I asked why, did he have problems with it or such? He said he did not have any problems with it, but he decided to uninstall it because he has heard it wasn't stable...
I've heard many people saying "I've heard it wasn't stable", but I've still got to meet one IRL who actually had more problems with it, than with earlier windows...

Untill we recently upgraded at work, we used 98Se.
I use ME at home.
ME has been considerbably more stable in my experience.
They both suck. But ME sucked less.

Best move I made in regard to operating systems, was to switch from Me to XP.
Me was a rushed out product so that microsoft could make more money off of the turn of the century/millenium.
Maybe it's more stable and faster now than it was a couple of years ago due to patches etc, but when I upgraded to XP, I saw an immediate improvement in the speed and stability of my machine.

Ah HAH! you must link in the graphic!
When I select it from the smilies provided by apolyton, the banana never works -- I figured he must have done something to get banned by Ming or something...
"Okay, so why Win98SE? Certain upgrades to functions, newer versions of files, but most importantly, full use of the file caching system. When Win98 was being written, the programmers had no idea that MP3's and long video files would become so popular. The defauly caching system couldn't handle such big files and you would get pauses while the system loaded the next section of the file. Go to Start/Run and enter sysedit with Win95. Open System.ini. Under the heading [VCACHE] you will probably see nothing. With Win98SE you might see something like this:
There are other improvements, but this is the big one. (In my opinion, not worth it since you can change these setting manually in Win98 and Win95 -- but don't put this in Win95--it doesn't support chunksize.)
Okay, so why WinME. The most important difference with WinME is that DOS emulation was dropped completely. A big mistake, in my opinion. PnP was upgraded and streamlined -- but unfortunately, many of the things you could tweak with Win9.x are disabled in WinME. It's basically Windows for dummies."
As I said they're virtually the same. Stick with win98se and do the upgrades (although they may be hard to find since MS no longer supports win98se)
I consider it fine if I can make it through a clean install without a BSD. I never turn em off- you never know if they'll start again. So far XP-pro on my latest PC has been a dream.
