  • I want to change part of my diet.

My dad, before he died from a stroke when I was 19, had a heart attack when I was 10 years old and always had cholesterol problems.

I don't want to be in my dad's boat by the time I reach "blissful" middle age. Now, I always enjoyed eating meat, and never had problems eating the reccomended daily servings -- in fact, I eat more than I should on some days.

I want to decrease the amount of meat in my daily diet, and dramatically increase my intake of daily protein through a variety of types of beans.

The thing is though, I want to find delicious ways to include beans into my diet so I don't get sick of them. And what type of beans has the most protein per serving?

Also -- what type of beans is more enticing to the taste buds? And what SIMPLE dishes/recipes can you suggest that includes beans as the main course, instead of meat?

Thanks for any help -- don't know how successful I will be with this diet change.

Well, beans are a good substitute of meat, let's say that replacing 200 grams of meat with 80-100 grams of beans/lentils/alike is a good thing- just avoid fried stuff, fats and sweets, for the rest there's no big deal about meat, which can be replaced by fish and chicken btw
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

Beans are not a complete protein and can barely give you enough protein to grow. If you want to avoid eating tons of red meat eat fish and eggs. Use a protein powder with a good vanilla taste and add that 1 or 2 times a day, it's fast easy and tastes pretty good. If you have a family history of heart or elavated cholesterol problems make sure to exercise and avoid the bad fats and include oat bran as much as possible. If your already heavy, which I don't think you are, go with a lower carbs higher good fat approach. Make sure to space your meals out to be able to eat small amounts often and never just pig out. Most importantly monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels and keep in touch with the family doctor. Sometimes things are caused by genetics, but more often it's by nutrition and lifestyle, so you can control your own future.
As far as beans tasting good, make some 3 bean chilis and see what you like. Beans are a pretty individual taste. My wifey loves garbonzo beans and I think they are awful, but give em a try and see what you think. Also supplement nuts into your diet, they have some protein and taste good.

Oh, I don't plan to become a vegetarian. And thanks for your help.

No thanks -- I don't want to supplement my diet with protein powder. I want to eat normal food.

But I swear that sometime ago, I heard about a type of bean that has high concentration of protein. Or am I mistaken??

            thanks for your help

If you eat any meat at all, you don't have to worry about protien. Even if you go vegetarian, you don't have to worry about it as long as you have a varied diet. Protein is over hyped, the western diet has way more then you ever need in the first place.

I've cut down on red meat and usually have one all veg/fruit meal with whole wheat bread per day.

I'm also exercising a lot more then I did a few months ago... mostly swimming & dancing (which is exercising and partying at the same time !) .

In the last 6 months, my 52 yr. old brother-in-law has had a triple bi-pass and two heart attacks. A 86 yr. old uncle had a mild heart attack and a 96 yr. old great uncle had a fatal heart attack... OK, its a given if your 96 you're just looking for an excuse to die, but still...

Lenses are the real divine gift. One of the healthiest foods, and an excellent one at that (better with a tad of pork meat though)

Try finding some quinoa. Its an andean grainish thing that's small and round. Its got more protient than any other plant food-product and it tastes great (kind of crunchy and nutty) and is pretty much fat free. Works great in soups and stews (and goes well with Indian food for some bizarre reason).
