When I ask people this they always say that it is because they don't have those sounds in their alphabet so they never speak them, therefore those muscles aren't developed. But what about adopted Asian kids that never learn their native language and learn English just like the average Caucasian? Many of them still have a hard to saying r's and l's. I don't understand how an ethnicity could evolve to say certain consonant sounds. It doesn't seem to me like a factor in natural selection.

Why do Asian people have trouble saying r's and l's?
"The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. How many crimes, wars, murders, how many miseries and horrors might the human race had been spared by the one who, upon pulling up the stakes or filling in the ditch, had shouted to his fellow men: 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are lost if you forget the fruits of the earth belong to all and that the earth belongs to no one." - Jean-Jacques RousseauTags: None

John, you need to go to some bigger cities to hang out for a while. I believe your sample is too small.(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget

Well, I used to live in Seattle, and some Asian people say their r's and l's just fine, but a lot of them have trouble saying them even though they only learn English."The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. Yeah I just read that thread-except it says:
“Those who have a short frenulum (a strap of tissue linking the tongue to the floor of the mouth) can face problems pronouncing some characters due to a disturbance in lateral movements of the tongue,” said Bae Jung-ho, an oral surgeon at Seoul’s Yonsei Severance Hospital, who operated on the six-year-old last month.
And why do Asians have a longer frenulum? How is it a factor in natural selection?"The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. Why do Americans have trouble speaking any language other than English correctly?

I'm not making fun of them, I just want to know.
And it's because we don't need to. There isn't an opportunity for most Americans to speak another language often. And, now they are starting to teach othert languages. In California I hear they are requiring that students take Spanish."The first man who, having fenced off a plot of land, thought of saying, 'This is mine' and found people simple enough to believe him was the real founder of civil society. Regarding the language thing, don't you think it would be silly to develop a language that uses sounds that most people can't pronounce properlyThe enemy cannot push a button if you disable his hand.

I don't understand it. My first language was Chinese, but I learned English just fine. I can also speak with an English, Australian, Spanish, French, Texan, New York - whatever accent, no problem. It doesn't seem that hard to me. I guess it's how hard you try, or maybe what accent the voices in your head are using.-30-
