PS2 to drop to $99?

Reports are suggesting that the PS2 will match Nintendo's recent price drop in the US.

Over the past few weeks we have seen the GameCube price drop to $99.00. With the price cut, systems have been flying off shelves as Nintendo has enjoyed the best sales they have had almost since the system's launch two years ago. Today reports have indicated that the industry leader, Sony, is planning to drop the price of the PS2 to $99.00, matching Nintendo.

A report from GameCube Advanced has indicated that the retailer Target has received promotional material from Sony to advertise the new price drop. According to their sources the price drop is expected to come in mid-November.

Although this would make things very interesting, Sony has not confirmed the reports at this time.

Wow... this is interesting news. Will the X-Box match it? If so... I can finally see myself buying a next-gen console. $99 would be a purchase I could see myself making.

I already own a GC. The only price drop that might interest me is the X-Box.

I think the X-Box may have to drop price. Seeing that GCs have been flying off shelves since it dropped to $99, we might see similar things with the PS2, and Microsoft may have to lower its price so that Sony doesn't gain back some US marketshare.

Yep.. X-Box may have to follow suit, or else I may get a PS2... of course really the only reason I'd get a console is for NCAA 2004 .

The Xbox would certainly drop to $99 if the PS2 did.

The PS2 dropping to $99 would be the one sans games and sans the network adapter, though.

With my PSX from early 1997 getting, well, old, I could consider a PS2 for ~100 euros. The games aren't exactly cheap either, though.

Currently it's 220 e which is a bit steep for my wallet.

any good role playing games for this ps2 thingy?

Final Fantasy X (Squaresoft as DinoDoc said), Xenosaga and its forthcoming sequel come to mind. Probably several other Japanese-type RPGs (or rather adventure-oriented RPGs). Mind you, they are rather linear and set-in-stone character-wise compared to, say, Fallout or Baldur's Gate. I do enjoy both flavours of RPG.

ffx, suikoden3, xenosaga1, xenosaga2. those are some rpgs.

the first is square, the next three are by others. i think the xenosagas are namco's, after taking the developers, now in the form of monolith, from square.

some action ones are ffx-2, kingdom hearts, and the upcoming kingdomhearts2.
