In addition to the constant stream of ambulances and police helicopters which wake me up on occasion, there are three incidents which have occurred in the last two weeks that stick in my memory.
In reverse chronological order:
1) This morning I'm sitting in my living room when there comes a squeal of tires and a crashing sound from the front windows. Sure enough, some old guy has managed to plow into a parked truck with his raggedy-ass Chevy Malibu. The hood is completely crumpled. I go outside and ask if he's okay. He says yes (though he seems rather confused) so I go back inside. Police arrive a couple of minutes later.
2) 3 or 4 days ago, some crazy guy was walking down the same street, right in front of my house, screaming to himself, with his t-shirt half on and half off. A wailing of sirens and all of a sudden there's two (2!) ambulances and a police car blocking off the street on both sides of him. The paramedic talks to him nicely and he gets into the back of the ambulance quietly.
3) A week and a half ago, I'm just getting ready for bed (around 11:30) when I hear loud talking coming from the alleyway behind my house. A woman's voice is saying, from the fire escape of the third floor of the rowhouse next to mine: "I know you in there, sleepin' with my husband. I want you to know that if he sleeping with you while he my husband then he be sleepin' with somebody else when he yours. That's why I'm divorcin' him. I'm tryin' to help you, but you don't even have the decency to come to the door!" and so on for ten minutes or so. Somebody else screams at her that it's late and the neighbours are trying to sleep. After another five minutes of ranting she gives up, gets in her car and drives out of the alley, past my window.
Not to mention how some guy tried to pick up my mother when she was here last month (again, on the same block)...
