    President Bush.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

20 miles per second? those rocks in space are fast!

I didn't know we could see that far into space. If it is travelling at 20 miles per second and it won't be here till 2015, it must be a long way!

Is there any safe place where we can store our stockpiles of bannanas before this thing hits?

Should be rising to prominence and establsihing world peace (at least with Israel and the rest of the world) for seven years. The tribulation ensues. Eventually battle of Armageddon culminates with a large rock from the heavens being thrown down.

Any takers on who it will be?
Probably the next Pope or a future UN Secretary General.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Perhaps they will determine that it will miss us but in a forward thinking state of mind the goverment decides that they will test various methods of deflecting space objects so that when it happens for real we will have a proven method, but in a strange twist of fate all the experiments conducted actually move it into a course that will bring it to earth.
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh

Imagine shooting a rifle (.223 remington) vertically into a shallow pond (say 12cm deep). How much mud would be sprayed around?

Moral, there would be dust along with an extremely big tsunami. An asteroid impact on land would cause less damage (both short and long term) than one hitting the ocean.

Long term effects - First the dust would reduce sunlight below levels needed for photosynthesis, thus the plants and phyto-plankton would die. Then slowly up the food chain, each level would starve as it's food source died off. Also, with the carbon cycle broken, co2 levels would begin rising but not significantly enough to prevent a nuclear winter which would kill off almost everything else.

All is not lost since the cockroaches will most likely survive.
The analogy doesn't hold. You can't just scale it up that way.

Dust from the bottom of the ocean is not going to go into the AIR, no matter how much of it there is.

You know, people have predicted the end of the world so many times throughout history. I just don't think it's really gonna happen.

In this case it isn't. NASA have now apparently decided it isn't going to hit so we're safe for the moment.

                                Until the next one.
