i was reading a book by a greek journalist who has spend years on years covering the USSR and was there during its collapse and has also been to east germany etc.
i think orwel's book was much more relevant there.

Let's see... they still don't teach that people should be all the same, they encourage diversity. No unification. Girls are losing virginity, on average, at 15. No anti-sex league. Bush's speeches aren't being corrected afterwards - no Ministry of Truth.

There's no doublethink involved. Now, the USSR really did look like what 1984 describes, even with its nice Ministry of Love.

really? around me (long island) it was closer to 17, unless it was kept a secret, which i doubt it was.

We aren't the Baltic States. There is a very real pro-abstinence movement in the US (remember Brittany's pledge, and who is it now, Mandy Moore?). Here in Jacksonville, abstinence "training" (read propoaganda) is manditory.

They teach things like, condoms don't work and HIV can get through condoms and crap like that.

It depends. Of the people who have sex, I would be willing to be you're right. Of the rather large number of people who wait until you're married, I think it's likely a little older. Mind you, a lot of these "virgins" do everything but intercourse.
