  • Advise GP on a new VCR or DVD player

Well my 15 year old VCR has started eating tapes. Looks real nice on the outside and otherwise functions fine. Figure it is time to buy a new one. What should I get? Oh...unless you know how to make it stop eating tapes.

When looking for a DVD-player, don't be afraid to look at cheap, unknown brands.
These are usually good machines, and most of them are region-free as well

I want to drive to a store and buy something. I am not an audiophile. But I'm also somebody who's time is worth money. Just tell me what to buy that will last a while.

While we're at it, I need hardwood floor/landlord advice. My kitty just knocked a very heavy metal paperweight (like a 6 inch metal "jack") onto the floor where it made a nice puncture of the floorboard.

Unless you plan on spending $300 or more, I would suggest getting something that is the same brand as your TV. That way, you don't have to worry about remotes. Most mainstream brands are the same around the $100-$250 range. Such compatability generally gives you better performance. It sounds like you take good care of your ****.

DVD: I fancy JVC personally; they're not too expensive either (no more than $ 150).

Floor: maybe you can try filling the puncture with liquid wood.

Yeah, there are some very decent $100-150 models made by Sony, Panasonic, etc.

I have long since lost all remotes. The dying VCR is a JVC as is the live TV (of similar age).

JVC's won some home cinema prizes in Eurocomland the last couple of years, and their players can play DVD Video, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, and MP3 formats.

And all that for just 150 euros?

Do they make combined VCR/DVDs? Aren't most videos (like at that store with the flirty salesgirls) still on video?

Yes, those exist. A mate of mine has one.
