We have a toshiba combo DVD/VCR. Though I'd recommend you get the one with the home theatre system. Cool way to blow your eardrums on guy flicks.

Go to your local home despot and buy some wood filler. Ask the guy on the orange aprin. Remember the type/color of the hardwood floor you got so you don't have to run back and forth exchanging stuff.

I got a JVC, so far as we're talking about set-top DVD players. It's very good, at least in my opinion.

Don't spend too much on a DVD player. Even an audiophile/videophile can find an excellent player for $200 (Panasonic), which in itself would be overkill on features unless you have a kick ass TV. Just go to Beast Buy and pick out a likely candidate.

If he doesn't run the sound from the DVD player to his stereo receiver, then those would probably do just fine.

GE was actually branding some Chinese VCR/DVD combos last Christmas for something like $80. Those Chinese products are super inexpensive.

ALL of the VCRs and DVDs are made in China now, it's just that some have a US or Japanese name slapped on the front. That nameplate sets you back $100-$150.

VCRs are going the way of the 8-track. Buy a DVD player and join the 21st century.
